Shop Clearance Score!

I just picked up all of this stuff from a craigslist-listed shop clearout.

A bunch of C-clamps, a section of railroad track (my new anvil), two sickles (yeah, sickles), a rubber mallet, a shrinking hammer, a pipe wrench, a giant copper tube cutter, three Craftsman wood clamps, some heavy-duty tin snips, a medium grinding wheel, a single rusty ice skate (the kind that clamps to your shoe), a few stainless bowls, a pretty heavy metal punch, some 3M utility cloth and a weird, British-made universal clamp with a receiver for a 1/2" rachet.

Not bad for $60!

a giant copper tube cutter,

would't need to be nearly that heavy. What you have is for steel galvanized water pipe and black gas pipe up to about 2" diameter. Will also cut conduit and copper, but is overkill there.

Nice score, lots of good stuff there. I like the adjustable square socket. very unique.


BTW the "Heavy duty" snips (Malcos?) are a good score but are not actually heavy duty; they are an aluminum framed set of bench snips with hardened steel inserts for the lighter gauges of sheet metal. Perfectly serviceable, and nicer to use all day as they are not so ****** heavy as ordinary bench snips. Probably for no more than 24 or 22 ga.

The real "heavy duty" snips are the Wiss "Specials" for use on SS and alloy metal. Real Brutes.

Older Wiss snips will often have inlaid blades inset into the more ductile frames and handles. You can see this on the flat site as a different color of metal especially as they age. these are well worth getting and if needed, sharpening.

I'm not sure if Wiss still makes then inlaid... I think I remember seeing maybe one other (used) example of an inlaid blade (other that steel into aluminum) by any other company, but can't remember who it was.

Well, I went looking, and I'm glad I have a pretty full compliment of Wiss snips (and scissors for than matter) from "back in the day" Apex/Cooper seems to have done to Wiss what they do to everything: destroyed it. I saw no mention of any inlaid blades anywhere, and the snips look like **** in the pics...

Well I'm always watching for good snips used, and find them often enough at bargain prices..

You win a you ****. Some great tools there. Your larger c clamps are forged and that is the best kind. The smaller are cast and certainly ok. The tin snips are a pleasure to use and the wood clamps are nice also. The utility cloth is quite pricey by itself!! The RR track will serve you well as will the pipe cutter.

I'm a Midwest guy only now, simply because of what I've head Wiss has become. It's not bad per se, but a lot of people that use the snips all day long say they're just not the same. If I'm buying a decently priced American product, I want the quality to be there too.
