Shop fan motor

My 42 inch shop fan 1/2 hp motor burned up. Here are the specs > on the OEM motor.
-1/2 Horsepower
-2 Speed
-115 Volt
-1 Phase
-60 HZ
-56 Z
-1/2″ Diameter x 1 1/2″ Long Shaft
-1725/1140 RPM


I have a good Dayton 1/2 hp split phase motor that has the same size shaft and it will bolt right on. Its a 1725 RPM motor. I plan on using the same 2 inch pulley . I know its not a 2-speed but I can live with it running on high. Will this motor run the three blade 42 inch shop fan without issues ? or should I just order a new one for this fan ?

One half horse motor should be able to substitute for another.

Actually I have been running a 1/3 hp motor on the fan for the last 6 years . It has worked perfect . I removed it from my old attic fan as I no longer used it. I was just thinking this one would work better. I will know soon.

Although it lasted 6 years that's probably why it failed. Replacing a 1/2 Hp motor with a 1/3 Hp of the same speed on a fan will likely overload the motor.

I just re-read your post and wanted to clear something up. The 1/3 HP motor did not fail. Its still running fine. I just wanted to install the correct one being I just got hold of one for free.
