Shop Floor Vacuum, What do you use?

Looking for a shop floor vacuum that will really do a good job of picking up dust off of my concrete shop floor. I seen the upright from Dayton and Shop Vac but they seem to have bad reviews about general quality as well as the bags not catching the dust and just blowing it through the pores in the bag or the bag plugging up and not getting enough suction. I am thinking about rigging up a powered canister vacuum head to a shop vac and giving it a try.

I have an old blue and grey ~5 gallon shop vac thats probably 15-ish years old.

I buy the "Best" bags as if drywall was going to be sanded and also use a pleated air filter inside of that.

Before that it bypassed a small stream of dust. But I've had many good years with it. Its got a balance of quiet and power that others missed on either front.

There are more exotic vacs and I might try one someday if the other one can't be repaired or consumables go obsolete.

A coworker swears by the wall mounted Vac U Maid which sounds good, it suggests good airflow due to its horsepower albeit at the expense of longer hoses.

I've often thought of a central vac set up . they can be bought used at charity shops inexpensively
This is what I use, we call them ducted vac system here. Good thing is the bin is outside the garage so no dust gets in the air. Also system is 6 horsepower or so and it eats whatever I throw at it.

I have a rigid 5hp 16g vacuum and really like it.
could be more powerfull, but with the water vaccuming end it make a great job. (Just have to replace it every 4-5year because the small "feet" get grinded flush)

I'm with maxpat. I have had a Ridgid 16 gallon vac for over ten years and it is still going strong.

My 16 gallon Ridgid professional (6.5 peak HP) died this week. I was completely happy using it (especially since it was free to me brand new 10 years ago). I took it apart and found that that the wire from one of the carbon brushes had become detached, so I ordered new brushes (hard to find, and with shipping $20) installed them and it did not work as expected.

Unfortunately Ridgid does not offer replacement motors, and because of that I can not recommend that any one purchase a Ridgid vacuum as if something goes wrong with it you won't be able to repair it.

I'm now going to pick up a Shop Vac 5 HP Peak off of Craigslist for $25. Hoping to get another 10 years.

I purchased a Stihl SE 122 about 6 months ago and have been very pleased. It's not a cheap vac but so far seems to be a quality unit.

Here is mine...but you could get a cheaper version and try that. Floor space is valuable in my shop so on the wall is where it went.

I got the vacumaid GV50PRO garage vac on amazon for my detached garage and I love it. I use it with the heap filter bags (few extra $$ but worth it) and it does a great job on the floor and I dont notice any dust coming out the exhaust side. I do plan to eventually seal the floor to lower the concrete dusting, I notice my foot steeps coming out of the garage on the blacktop all the time. floor looks clean but it dusts a lot.

The house garage I add a port from the Eletrolux central vac that I can hook into and have garage hose kit. The unit is actually in the garage so adding a port was easy and when I did I also piped the exhaust out side so zero chance of dust.

I use a blow gun and air pressure LOL, no vacuum.

I sweep up most of it and then use an electric leaf blower to shoot the fine stuff out the garage door. That works better and much faster than my air hose nozzle.

But I do have a Fein vacuum with the 16 foot hose. Works great for cleaning car interiors and other jobs where you need something that really *****.:)

They are ridiculously expensive so be on the lookout for a good condition used one. That’s how I got mine.

I generally just sweep with a broom and dust pan. On occasion, I break out the regular Cman 16 gallon shop vac and start sucking any other **** up.

A few times a year or after a particular nasty project, I break out the mop bucket with hot water and Simple Green. Even after sweeping twice, the mop water still gets nasty.

In my garage, I use the Intervac GarageVac. It just hangs on the wall and is plenty powerful. The provided hose reaches anywhere in the garage and I can also vacuum a car outside of the garage too. The bags seem small at first, but one usually lasts me a year or so of use. I really like it.

They also advertise it as a central vac for your house too. Install it in the hallway and reach anywhere in the house with a long hose.

Slightly off subject but I have used my rug doctor carpet cleaner set to hard surface. It works great in cleaning mud film off the floor and I can control what gets wet.would also work for control of dust.
