Im looking for opinions or info on what size heater I need for my shop/garage. I have a 30x40x14 pole barn. walls are R19 and ceiling will be R49. I have 2 windows that are 3x4 and 2 overhead doors that are 10x12 and 1 service door. I was thinking maybe 75,000btu hot dawg or Renzor with separated combustion chamber. But I found a used 1 year old 100,000 renzor on Craigslist. I plan on keeping it around 40-45 most of time and only turn it up to 50-60 on weekends when I am out there. What size Heater do you recommend. This is in MInnesota Also.
Thanks in advance.

maybe a stupid question but a 75,000 rated heater only puts out around 60,000. is that still ok? which number are you suppose to go by when you do the calculations.

Your real decision is seperated combustion or not. If just normal garage activities, then likely don't need SC. However, if a lot of sawdust or fumes, then SC will be best as it burns clean air from outside. SC setup will cost you quite a bit more, both for heater and the flue installation.

How much was the Reznor 100K Btu heater going to cost you?? Was it SC??

the used reznor V3 is Separated combustion and was asking $700 and is 1 year old. A new Hot Dawg HDS75 75,000 which is separated is roughly $1150. The Reznor is actually 105,000 with an output of 87,000 btu. Is that going to cause short cycling or not enough to be an problem. The Reznor heaters are slightly more efficient (83% vs 80%)but the Hot Dawg is Slightly quieter (48 decibels vs 54 decibels at 15 feet). The owner of the heater said he heated 1600 SF and had no problem keeping up with doors opening periodically. MY doors will not be opening very often. Is it safe to assume the 75,000 would be cheaper to run?

Wow to get seperated combustion Reznor 100K Btu at $700 . . . I'd jump on it assuming you're fine with extra expense in flue installation. To confirm it's just one year old, get serial number and call in to Reznor and verify.

MN insulated garage that is 30'x40' with 100K Btu heater would be a little overkill, but can't beat the price. Heck help the guy un-install that Reznor and get some free double-wall flue pipes !!

I just looked again and im not sure it is separated combustion. I googled renzor v3 and the one that came up was but not i looked a little more and I see the that the V3 doesn't mean separated combustion. So im guessing its not. That would explain the price. I do occasional work with wood and some work on cars etc. Is it worth the money for the separated combustion especially since it will be 10-12 feet off the ground?

In Western NY, I have two heated buildings. One is 36 by 48 and one is 40 by 60; both have 14 foot ceiling heights. They both have 100,000 BTU input (80,000 BTU output) heaters and they work fine. You should be ok with the 75000 unless you get a great deal on the 100,000. If you will be opening the door frequently, you might want the bigger one to catch up after opening the door.
