I have a smaller shop - 30x22 with a normal A frame style roof. Inside about 7.5 feet height is the ceiling which is made up of 2x4's on 24 inch centers. I was thinking of going up about 2 feet and just going joist to joist using 2x4's bolted in giving me a much higher ceiling - but what would it take to not need a ceiling at all?

if you are thinking of removing the botom stringer of your joists DONT DO IT! you cannot effect the structure or geometry of joists, if you are not an engeneer and under stand forces. there will be nothing to brace the bottom 2 feet of your joist under the outer limbs against the weight of the roof. It could sheer and collaps all at once! in order to have no ceiling you would need to rebuild the roof with a heavy frame timber style roof. if you send me a sketch of the structurethere now including the wall , so iknow what i can put on them, ill be happy to scketch up a plan for you
