Have a 40 x 64x 12 ft high pole structure with 8 ft loft on one end and a 16 ft on the other. That gives me a 40 x 40 main shop area. I am taking down two 400w low bay metal halide and 5 175w mercury vapor lights. I am putting up a white metal ceiling in the 40x40 area. I was thinking about putting up 9 4ft 6 lamp t8 fixtures with 6500k lamps with 3 fixtures on a switch. Does this sound like a good plan. The lighting has worked well for years but I want to improve it. It takes minuites for lights to get up to speed. I already have 20 4ft t8 lamps in the end with the 16ft loft. 16x40 8ft high that is. My tool and machine area.

It's really a personal thing, but I find more fixtures spread the light more evenly and reduce my use of location lighting.

Also a personal thing, but do you like the light from the 6500k lamps? I find it to be a little too blue for my liking. Many people prefer the "pure white" look though.

I think you'll find the new lighting to be significantly more energy efficient though. So that's always a good thing!
