I'm going to be replacing my garage lighting and I found some light fixtures at a local hardware store that I liked, but they have chains installed on them along with a plug attached. I plan on installing the shop lights directly to the ceiling and hardwiring them. Just curious is it usual easy to convert lights that are designed to be hung from chains?

Depending on where you are located and how cold it gets, make sure the lights are cold starts. If they are aren't and it gets below freezing they will flutter and flicker until they get up to temp.

Cord & plug connected shop lights are in almost all cases cheap junk, the heart of them is the ballast & the cheapest is the norm with them, spend the money upfront & buy quality.

I have four of the hanging shop lights and they have done a reasonable job but I am hoping to upgrade to better hard wired lighting soon.

Okay thanks for all the replies. Money isn't a huge concern, so I'd rather buy good quality light fixtures from the get go. Weather is a concern since I live in Northern Canada. I've been noticing low/high bay fixtures during my browsing. Will my choice have any impact with a 13ft ceiling? I'm assuming low bay would be okay?
