I did a search and found some similar threads regaurding truss lofts, but wanted some input regarding building a non attic loft.

I would like to build a loft at the rear of my shop that spans the 30' width and extends approximatly 10' out. I'll need at least 22' of the 30' to be without post support from beneath so I can store my boat under it. The top will hold my Ice Shanty, hunting gear and a few bikes.

My question is what size engineered rim board should I run to span the 22' and nail my joist hangers to? Here's a little sketch up I created.

My garage is 24x30 ft. - 1.5 story...roof is sticked frame with 2x6 construction (no trusses).
- upper parts loft, engineered with building software to support 12 tons
(only because of the 30' open span)
- parts loft decked with 3/4" ply T&G

We ordered 20 wood-eye beams (+24 feet long) in a computer-structural design of 14" deep.
- factory made out of end laminated 2x4" (top & bottom) with 5/16" thick wood core

^^^^ Duckslapper - hope this helps some.

You can build it just like a second story on a house using wooden I-Joist or engineered parallel cord trusses. But you have to be able to rest the ends on a load bearing wall. So adding headers to the outside walls will be required. As far as span and load, I'd call a truss company and tell them what you need and they can draw up some plans.
