I'm needing input on what size floor joist and side boards i should use on a pole barn shop loft 8'x40' standing on 5"x5" post spaced every 10'.I was thinking about 2"x8"s just not sure and spacing apart.I'm only going to build shelves up there to store a bunch of small stuff i dont use often, nothing of significant weight. The shelves will all be built out of 2"x4"s. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

We use 2x10's for some extra peace of mind when we did our loft in the old shop. 6x6's used for posts 8' apart. We also thought we were only going to put light stuff up there but ended up using it for very heavy items as well so the extra support was nice to have.

When I bought into my building I had them build an 10'x50' office on one side resulting having a mezzanine above. I asked the building how much weight it would hold. He told me it was built to hold anything I would put on the cement floor. To meet code it was built with 2x10s, I think, spaced the same as you would a floor. Stored a lot of stuff up there without a problem. Better to build it stronger than you need because most like you'll need it even you don't to now.
