I just built my detached 30x40 this year and I was calling it a garage at first, but quickly realized it made more sense to call that the shop and refer to the attached 2-car as the garage. Over in the shop are all my automotive tools, soon have a 2-post lift so it really is shop that I also have room to park extra cars in

Personally, I've always considered a "garage" as the place to park my daily drivers and is attached to the house whereas a "shop" is where the magic happens, or work gets done rather. A shop is where the tools and equipment are housed and things get built and/or repaired whereas the garage is a place of storage for daily drivers, lawn & garden equipment, bikes, stroller, etc. Now most don't have both but it still has me curious as to whether you call it your shop or garage and why?
Its "the garage." A DETACHED garage. Because I live in a mid-1920s brick center hall colonial. The corner lots in my neighborhood often have attached garages, but they're predominantly 10 or 15 years "less old."

I haven't gotten an automobile in there since last summer when a hail storm was imminent (1/3 cars in the driveway made it in, none were damaged). But my "daily rider" is a cyclocross bike, which hangs quite nicely just inside the door.

I've also called it my "office" from April '20-November '22 when I was 40% telework (just a parabolic resistance heater so no winters in the garage). The workbench makes a decent desk with a high chair, a small TV monitor.

Skid loaders, tractors and farm related stuff go in the shop to stay warm in the winter and get repaired/serviced as needed. It's a shop through and through.

Mama Bear isn't keen on the skid loader in the house garage lol.

I've a buddy in Minneapolis who is going to build a garage/shop and keeps calling it a barn. Da fug dude ?!?! Garage, shop, speed shop, shed .... anything but a barn !! It's not a barn if there are no farm animals in it :lol_hitti

I keep asking him if he wants me to bring a load of steers or a couple thousand chickens down to put in his barn

Getting ready to build a 18x20 work room on the back of my 24x24 detached garage. No vehicles only fixing and making stuff. Also, a good place to hang out and piddle around. I'm going with 8.5 walls and 7/12 scissor trusses for more head space. How big is your dedicated work area?

Sounds like a nice addition. Also just noticed that you are new to the forum. Welcome.

My total shop is 3,000 square feet (50x60) but I have part dedicated to storage for our 40' coach and use the dividing wall for my metal rack as well as storing shop equipment that is not used as often all of which is now on wheels and can be easily rolled into the shop area when needed. The shop is 2,000 square feet (40x50) where I do all of the actual work.

To me a "garage" is where I work on my stuff. A "shop" is where I take my stuff to be worked on.

In my area lots of car guys have pole barns and they refer to them as barns.
