I have a sewer line running out of the back of my house to the city system... It's right where I want to build my new shop. Any of you guy have any thougths about that?

I should add it's a newer house built in 2010 and the line has been surveyed

If the line goes bad, there is a way around the shop but it would involve several 45 degree turns to get back to the city's line.

Another thought I've had is to put in a back up line and cap it

What material is your current line?? If it's plastic it's probably good till long after you're dead, plus if you build over it, it's protected. Do you have codes/zoning that you have to follow in your area?? If yes, you'd better talk with them. If no, then have at it and worry about it if and when a problem pops up.

At the very least I would put in a junction and an inspection point at the house before and then again before it joins the city line. We come across a lot of pipe that has collapsed over the 7 to 10 year mark in plastic. The pipe is good, its the lazy work from the people that did the trenches and backfilling that you can't rely on.
Can you handle your wife going off her brain until it gets fixed when something happens. Go with your gut feeling and run the spare line, remember NO 90 degree bends, they will block up first, 45 bends are good. If we think that there could be problems later on we will put in 3x30degeree with about 12 inches of pipe between each fitting to make sure it is a slow curve.
JMHO!

I built My 30x40 right over the sewer line from My house to the alley.
I had replaced the old line with 4 inch PVC a couple years before. The City Inspector had no problem with Us pouring a slab over the sewer line.
I stubbed up a riser in the corner of the shop, so I can eventually add a shop bathroom.
