shop press , chapter 1

after a good bleeding at the doctor , didn't get much done . after much begging , trading , and calling in favors this is what i have for the project , cost $ 35.00 . after seeing this other projects , mine seems boo-ring , but it will be easy and cheap . still haven't made up my mine A or H style . as always commits and suggestions welcome .

I will be looking forward to following your build. I vote for an H style press. That is the style I want to build for myself one of these days.

Also, if you look over at Old Car Guys "New Toy shop" thread I think he has a few pics of an H press he made if you are looking for inspiration.

and the H style wins . all 2"x2" tubing top and bottom is 3/16" sides are 1/8" , 16" in between the tubes and 36" tall , more tomorrow i hope .

I am all for creating somthing, but from the looks of your build, the stress will be on your welds. From all of the presses I have seen they use I beams and C channels and have everything bolted toegether and pinned.
How much pressure are you looking at producing?

this is just a small shop press it will use a 6 ton bottle jack , that is why i notched the top instead of 45 degree angle , not sure how to measure pressure ? , got company today no much done .

Nice work Mr Deere! How did you notch the side posts? Feeding through a band saw? Weighing down the stock and then slicing with a chop-saw?

Looks too clean for a torch cut.

Did you decide how the unit will slide. You will want to somewhat trap the sliding part but still make it move freely. Might be nice to find some 3" or 4" lengths of larger tubing you could slide over your side rails and then weld your sliding beam the jack rests on to them.

sammerdog & mmg440 and all others , thanks for the interest . i cut the notch with a chop saw then used a air cut off tool to do the sides , i would love to have the good tools , but being very poor i must make do with what i got . i can't afford any more steel this month , but will weld up some 3 sided braces for the sliding part . at my age i have it pictured in my mind but is hard to explain , thats why my posts have lots of pictures .

not much done today do to honey,do"s for the wife , but did mad a small box for the top of jack to set in , so it won't kick out . got a question want to use a air tool extension with adapters as the center bolt ,as it is hardened will it work so i can work on small bearing also .

Not knowing what you intend to press. I offer this comment. You will be limited by the width of the tubing. eg. to press a bearing off, the armature would fit between the channels on the base plate, with press plates under the bearing. You are limited by the width of the square tubing size.

It the size wide enough for what you want it to do?

small stuff like ball joints , control arm bushings , universal joints , ect . the closest machine shop is over 20 miles away . i would never trust it to high stress stuff , at my age body parts don't heal good anymore . if you read my intro , you know i've already been through a lot .should this press be good for this things listed .

I think at the very least I would add some triangular gussets to the outside face of each intersecting tube. They would add a lot of strength and if they were large enough, maybe 4"x 4", help to combat the forces trying to elongate the frame when being used.

When you talk cheap, I made one from wood and bolts that I had left over from a project. It uses a 3 ton jack. I think my cost was around $10 for the springs and a couple of stair hangers. I have pressed off many things and used it to fabricate a number of parts for other projects.

Sorry no pics, I guess I should take a few sometime. It is an H design. Each side is made from a double 2x6 with a space between them. The top crosspiece is a triple 2x6 with those steel truss splice plates between it and the sides. The upper corners are thru-bolted with 5/8" bolts. The saddle is a double 2x6 resting on 3/4" pins thru the uprights. The lower edge of the saddle is protected with the stair tread hangers where it bears against the 3/4" pins. There are holes for the 3/4" pins in a stagger pattern up both uprights for height adjustment. The jack sits on a triple 2x4 crosspiece with a 1/4" plate on the underside. The top of the jack bears against a 2x2x1/4" angle that spans the triple 2x6 crosspiece. There are springs to return the jack to position.
Wood is interesting in this application because it groans so well when the press is loaded up.

Oh yea the press. Two rails sounds good. Are you planning on the same square stock or did you get some heavy angle or somthing for that.

before i broke my shop vice , then ran out of mig wire , then droped the nut and bolt box TWICE . this has not ben trued up , just laying there for you to see .

i wanted to know if it would bind up before welding , so here it is trued up , level , clamped together , works like butter (paul sr.) it makes me feel better , what spacing on the rail should i have .

got the top welded today , then smashed my finger with a 2 lb B.F.H. split it open about 1/8 inch , but being a long time married man i didn't scream i'am use to pain . if it were any bigger the old lady would have stiched it up for me . tomorrow i will ATTEMPT to make a small bearing holder/separator , if the throbbing lets up and gangrene hasn't set in .

this may be hard for you to understand , but with all my health issues , all this projects give me a reason to craw out of bed every day . if not for them , i'd probably be dead soon , plus i love to build cheap things .
