this may be hard for you to understand , but with all my health issues , all this projects give me a reason to craw out of bed every day . if not for them , i'd probably be dead soon , plus i love to build cheap things .

So what is your game plan to make a bearing separator. They are generally cast or forged pieces for the sides, and long bolts and nuts to hold them into the bearing. 9.99 for a small one is hard to beat you would probably spend half that for the bolts. and 16.00 for the larger one. You most likely will have to come up with a couple press plates or heavy metal stock also.

I see you have asked how wide of a spacing your should have. Well of course it needs to be very stable so it will end up close to your frame. The smaller the space the more limited on what you can press threw but of course limitations are also already in place with the press side. I am guessing by your design you make be able to space both rails out evenly with some sort of guide and get up to about 5" I need to see a pic of it mocked up to see how far out that bring them.

most of my home built tools have no plans or mock up . i just kinda look at a picture of what i want to build and the mess of odd and ends that i have to build it , and some how it comes together . sometimes even i don't understand it as i don't have much education . but i will take pictures .

before i broke my shop vice , then ran out of mig wire , then droped the nut and bolt box TWICE . this has not ben trued up , just laying there for you to see .

When you put all your parts together before welding them up and squaring them for the top section, and took that photo that was a mock up. That is all I am saying for your bottom rails???

Maybe it's just me. I am not getting how the separator is going to work?? how are you going to get it under a bearing to press when it is a fixed size. Am I missing somthing

Not to be critical -- please accept this as humble advice. You need to set the heat higher on that welder -- those welds look really "cold".

I have that same problem around my house. I have four "working areas" and any specific tool may inhabit any of them at any moment. Other people also "move" and use things which does not help at all.

Those welds do not look good. They look like some of mine when I have not had enough "shaky medicine" to calm my essential tremor. Of course I stick weld which makes it even worse.

i always use stitch welds , it was on the hottest setting , once i drill the holes , i will cut it in half , i had used 4 different plates to make up the difference for the square tubing . and believe me i had very good penetration . momma says i can't take the good camera out to the garage . as my right arm is broke forever , it flops around a little at the wrong times .

I am 56, and I believe the term started with an old British sitcom called "Rumpole of the Bailey" or something like that. SWMBO is used all over the net and has been used on GJ a few times.

you've inspired me to make my own this weekend. Needs a little bit of finishing yet, but its usable. Only thing I had to buy was $15 of springs and eye bolts.

Its about 42" tall. I'm using a 12 ton jack just because I have it, Id use 3-6 ton if I had one instead. Have to keep my eye open at the yard sales.

I have to thank Silver Hair Deere for sparking my interest. I needed a press to change out some u-joints and I also always wanted to have a shop press but the costs up here are rediculous with the shipping included for a 25 ton press at appox. $1000. Plus the idea of making somthing is always intriguing.
I decided to go a bit heavier then Silver Hair Deere's with a 20 ton press. I have approx $200 invested in rems from the metal shop and the jack.
I had to modify the jack for the in inverted application with an overhead oil reservior.
