Growing up, my Dad always used old T-shirts and what ever my Mom was throwing out, but I always thought it was "cool" that all of the pump jockeys had a red rag hanging out of their back pocket. Needless to say, when I finally got to be a pump jockey, that rag was back there !
When I first got married, I think I washed a batch of shop towels in the washing machine without pre-washing them. Boy did I get a lecture !
Now, I buy the giant size bag of blue paper shop towels at Sam;s Club about once every 2-3 years and a bag of red rags from HF about the same frequency. I usually have a couple of each laying around the garage in various stages of "use". The last step before hitting the trash for most of the rags is wiping out the bottom of the oil drain pan ! They are all pretty well used by then.
