Hey guys. Well some of you know the problems I have had. Recap: I had rotted sill plates on my 28 x 32 wood frame shop. I looked at different ideas to repair them. I began my work on removing stuff to lift the shop and I discovered termites. So now I have had to strip all of the walls to the studs to assess and repair the damage. I am just about through replacing all of the sill plates and will rebuilding almost all of one wall. I am also going to enclose another 12 x 28 cement pad that was put next to the shop. I hope to have it all dried back in before the end of summer. Here are some before and current pics.

So you had termites on wall that was on top of a slab?? I guess these buggers can travel pretty far across the plate.

My previous house I justy moved from I had something just as bad or worse than termites------ Carpenter ants look like termites and eat nite or day and do as much or more damge. I had some damge I noticed in the home when I was selling it but the pest guy didnt see it and the house sold. I replaced alot of damaged wood in the old garage when i rebuilt it.

Yeah those little buggers really ate the walls up on two sides. Here are some of the latest pics.

I don't know how bad they are in Texas- But here in middle Georgia termites will get into any wood that is near the ground. They will build "mud tubes" up to about 18" away from grade to get to wood. My house is built on a crawlspace with a lot of precautions against termites. They are horrible in my area...I actually had my shop foundation treated (sprayed with some bad stuff) just like my house was when the exterminator came out to inspect my house (built in 04) to renew my yearly home contract recently. We have a contract/warranty to keep them out and the exterminator is liable to repair any damages. ~ $180/year.

Runum- your new construction looks good- Sorry you are having to go through all that. Did you get your new stuff treated? I feel for you working in the heat out in Texas. Its been rough this summer around here. Good luck-looks good!

Been a few weeks since my last pics. I am surviving the brutal heat so far. Over 100 most days now. We haven't had rain since July 4. Got the roof finished today. Siding was also delivered this morning. Going to work on the doors next.

Looking good - how old was the original structure?

Thanks. The shop was originally built in 1987 using lumber that was pulled from a house built in the 1920's. Some of that wood was so hard that it would split when it was hit with a nail. Man it felt great not to have to get up on that roof today!

We finally got the siding on half of the shop. The other two sides are in the afternoon shade and will require a lot more piecework. Using Hardiplaks for the siding. Hope to get the siding finished later this week. I have to go back to work tomorrow so my progress will slow down.

Question, how hard is it to install hardiplank yourself? Did you just get it at HomeDepot or something. I have yet to do my siding and was looking into this. If I can install myself the price won't be so bad. Looks good!

It's not hard to install...pretty much the same as doing wood siding.

You should be able to get the hardiplank at most lumberyards, and you can get it pre tinted to the colour of your choice before delivery - that saves a lot of work.

Read the installation instructions with regards to required overlap and nail positioning relative to the edges, gaps at joints, and use caulking at the joints.

For tools, you should invest in a Hardiplank blade for your saw...they're expensive, but you'll just wind up dulling your normal carbide tip blades faster and wind up shelling out just as much anyhow. One tool I found essential (especially since I did the job myself) was a Geck Gauge for holding and positioning the planks. Naturally, a level is still needed to make sure you're staying level.

Make sure you do your cutting in a well ventilated area, and use proper protection. The board does contain silica fibres which are known to cause cancer.

I did the Hardiplank on my garage (30' x 30') and I'm happy with how it turned out. The house is next...

Heres the tool i used installing my hardiplank. Worked great and cheap. Did a 40 by 60 shop. A lot of panels . But the stuff is tuff. Get the first course level and your set. www.thelaborsaver.com/ Ebay has them for 19.99

Joe is that tool adjustable for different laps.

Looks really good. How much space did you gain by doing the 12x28 addition on the side and the addition on the back? What's the total size now?

Shop was 32 x 28 or 896 sq ft. Now is is 44 x 28 or 1232 sq ft. I am in the process of painting right now. Man, rolling that ceiling paint on is hard on the neck.

WOW paint really changes things looks great.

Exactly how many lights do you have, can't have enough I say.

Thanks. The paint really does make a difference. In the shop area I have 7 8 foot fixtures and 12 4 foot fixtures. I also have an 8 foot fixture in the clean room and 2 4 foot fixtures in the small storage room.

Yep that should be enough lights; I was worried I was going to over light my workshop, I’ll stop now. :)

BTW you rarely see the 8ft fluoro Down Under they are pretty much considered a PITA, when 2 x4ft will do the same job.

Thanks. Yeah, you're right. Probably won't be finished until summer of next year. I also added some shelves to store my literature and collectables.
