I always just wear New Balance cross trainers of some sort, but usually ones that had previously been used for gym or casual use. I only tend toward New balance because they are better than most about wide sizes. I tend to keep a few pair loosely tied that I can ship in and out of hands free near the basement and house entrances.

If I'm doing serious work standing on concrete all day I'll wear Carolina lace up work boots.

Depending on what all your doing... I mean if your just mowing the yard and nothing to heavy then like mentioned before Crocs are really comfortable... I have a set of regular crocs and then a set of crocs that look like house shoes with a rubber sole, so I wear them almost everywhere...

Eh.... my shoe life-cycle is as follows:

1. New gym shoes... used for the gym only

2. After they're a bit flat for running they become garag/yard work shoes

3. Once they get really dirty they become really dirty job shoes

4. Then when I get new gym shoes each moves down the chain and the pair at the end goes in the trash.

I do the same with demoting my New Balances to garage/outside work. Can usually pick up a pair for like $35-$40 at Kohl's or The Shoe Dept.

A pair of slip on "Romeos" are nice for normal type garage/yard work, then I have Wolverine workboots for work, so wear them if I need more ankle support/protection. Also a pair of Rubber boots for concrete/muddy stuff.
Also any old pair of tennis/running /baxketball shoes works for normal garage/yard work. I prefer the Adidas Classics(they weren't classics when I started buying them in High School) with the Rubber toes.

I like my Merrel Cameleons a lot. They have treated me well for the yard, shop, and just kicking around. Mine have Gore-tex, so they keep me dry too. Cost about $120 I think, but they've lasted a couple of years at least.

I have 5 pairs of shoes that are actively in the rotation and usually get replaced every year or 2:

1) Crocs- worn the most, whenever I don't require one of the specialty shoes listed below.
2) Simpson classic driving shoes (For when I am driving)
3) Dickies work boots (For when my feet need some protection)
4) New Balance cross trainers (for the gym)
5) Bass black leather slip on dress shoes (for when I need to look respectable)

All but the crocs can be found in the $50-60 range.

I'm partial to boots here, no experience with the wolverines you asked about though.

I had a pair of Red Wings that lasted about 5 years of nearly daily use and a lot of land clearing, yard, under the truck, hold something heavy/dirty/sharp in place with my foot work.

I still use them for yard/land work but I've switched to a new pair of Tony Lama's for just about everything else.

I would recommend and buy the Red Wings again though for a good work book. I'm VERY tough on shoes so anything that lasts 5 years for me is impressive. Normally a year or two and they see the trash.

Let see… top shelf boat shoes good for power washing projects.

Next shelf is hiking boots and dress boots

Next shelf is water proof boots, tevas for hot days, and ratty boots for dirty jobs

Bottom shelf is wife’s keds, dirty gym shoes mow/fertilize yard, and old black slip-ons for mechanic-ing.

Not shown are the below zero Klondike boots hiding under my utility sink for deep snow removal etc.

I decided to try some Wolverine low top work shoes. I'm going to restrict these to woodshop usage and see if I fall in love with the sole construction (which is supposedly very comfortable from what I read). I have other needs met, but was just dying when working on construction and woodworking projects.

Here's the ones I picked (note: the filename on the picture is the full name of the shoe in case you're interested)

Did you check for them at 6pm.com? A lot of shoe choices for about 1/2 the $ I find them for locally. We've ordered a couple things from them with great success.

my newest pair off the truck. they were about $160 but i just finance them interest free! i am in these boots about 11 hours a day and absolutly love them. i have tried every boot known to man and so far these are my favorite. the last pair i had were redwings and everyone says they are the best but $180 and they only last a year? normaly the first week or two of breaking in new boots is unbearable but with these boots they have been comfortable since day one. they are made by coastal boot and private labled for snapon.

Same here, except substitute "skateboard" for "gym".

I wear 8" leather work boots, almost year around. The best I have found so far, is cabelas, non-steel toe, non insulated and lug sole and waterproof. The worst thing they're made in China, but cost 60 bucks.

This is what I currently wear. The only time I wear tennis shoes is if I'm going to the gym. If I get another pair of Redwings though I will make sure they are made in the USA. This pair is made in china and hasn't held up as well as the other pairs of Redwings I have had in the past. I get a new pair every year as my company pays for most of it and keep the old pair for really dirty jobs.

I bought a pair of Timberland Pro Pitboss boots for working in the garage, and I've been wearing them all day and I like them a lot. They're very comfortable and for a boot pretty lightweight also. I personally like the feel of a boot vs. shoes or sneakers, and IMO the taller, heavier, tighter, the better. I'm going to be getting a pair of Danner's or some custom made Whites. I used to wear Puma's daily but the lack of arch support started hurting my legs. Even though the boots are heavier, I can leave them on all day and be fine.

I go with BARE feet whenever I can. After years of welding, grinding, wood splinters and things falling on them, they've grown to be as tough as steel-toed boots with the calouses of a Croc!

I had to Google it to learn what 'crocs' were. :wtf:

Eh? Doesn't everyone wear them in LA??

I hate the those things. My kids all have them. They remind me of sandals which I've refused to wear since I was born.

Does anyone else find it just a little bit amuzing that a bunch of guys are talking about shoes? Next thing you know the topic will be window treatments and pillow shams. By the way, Jack... those pink crocs will make your workbench look bigger.

I'm in the market for a good pair of shoes to beat up on in the workshop and while doing yard work.

Whatcha wearing these days?

I alway's wear boots at work.At home I have alway's worn sneakers at home. One day while building my garage I stepped in the ditch for the drain tile and turned my ankle all the way up tearing the tendons so I learned the hard way it's just as easy to get hurt at home as work so don't skip the safety of boots.

"Rockport" brand for work, play, and dress. Wore steel toes for 36 years never again. Last pair hanging in garage with hardhat and dinner bucket gathering dust!

I always just wear New Balance cross trainers of some sort, but usually ones that had previously been used for gym or casual use. I only tend toward New balance because they are better than most about wide sizes. I tend to keep a few pair loosely tied that I can ship in and out of hands free near the basement and house entrances.

Ditto. Once my NB gym shoes are too worn out for the gym, they become my yard shoes. My sis-in-law is a personal trainer, and she told me to keep good running shoes so my legs don't hurt.

If you are looking for steel toes, get a pair of Florshiem ComfortTechs. I guarantee you wont be disappointed. I think I have went thru every brand of steel toe out there and these are the only ones I can wear all day standing on concrete then still wear in the evening working around the house. Florsheim has the boot style or the low cuts http://www.bargainoutfitters.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=67047

I got a killer deal on Chippewa boots at sierratradingpost.com . I paid $29.95 for $180.00 boots in the clearance section.Made in the USA. Warren Buffet owns the company believe it or not. Steel toe, these are the most comfortable and durable boots I have ever owned !
