Shop sizing

Ok so in the planning phase, and looking for advice. Currently running a auto shop in a 17x32 building and going to expand. Im going to continue to use the current space & im currently looking at a pole barn that's 35x35x16. Is that enough room for two bays. 4 post lifts recommend 15x27 or so, the other bay will be two post. Any thoughts or advice from guys who have been here? Any advice from techs as far as features they like in a shop?

I've said it 100 times. . .find out how big you can get a permit for, figure out how much money you have, then figure out a way to build it bigger than that.

You will NEVER have to much space. Figure out your budget and go from there.

30x40 is just a hobby shop in this part of the world. Mine is 30x36 just for parking and play. . .I know I'm going to wish it was bigger but I have no more space.

I agree my 2100 sf shop feels small at times. Whats your total lot size? Remember an office and work bench area is a must.

Oh, and with my F350 crew cab short box in mine, if I want decent room at the back (enough to roll a box around and work) it eats up space fast.

When it went up it looked huge, now that I'm moving into mine it feels small.

Wow! Thanks guys! I guess I should go into a little more detail. I've got a 32x32 Office, with restrooms and plenty of tool storage, In the basement I have a poured floor thats 32x32x10 thats garage space, but limited in height. The 17x32 is a 2 post bay but the floor is damaged and with a ceiling height of 12' on the low end, it effected the current lifts spacing. The addition will require 15' Of clearance from the current building, and I've considered the idea of adding on instead of building new? (A little nervous about having to bring entire property up to code with what they would expect from a auto shop?) I wanted to educate myself before talking to the inspector (County not town). I've setup an appointment with the engineer that we've used on previous projects in hopes to be prepared and know what they'll fuss over and what they'll expect.

Well if you plan to rebuild make sure you are zoned for it. If my building is torn down I lose my zoning.

I can't agree with you more. I made the mistake of going 32'x36' and it's too small.....could have gone bigger too but thought it would suffice. Figure what you want make then go bigger.
