I went this route... two 18" Peavey Black Widow subs, two Peavey 15" cabs, a mixer, a couple of Crown 1500 XLS amps, a digital crossover, and a digital EQ.

It all sits up on the mezzanine above the office, and I run CD's through the DVD player, or stream from my phone via Bluetooth.

BLOCK PARTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!BYOB and masks

I don't understand the big LOUD stereo in the shop - I like music on in the background, but loud gets annoying fast.

I have an old laptop I use for looking up parts and such and just run "internet radio" for music.

There are tons of categories of music and lots of stations to choose from in each category so I never have to listen to the same thing twice if I don't want to. The fun part is discovering new stations from around the world - I even listened to Japanese pop for a bit - it was kind of fun!

It's plenty loud enough to hear anywhere in my small shop.

Finding new music is great compared the the stuff the radio stations force us to listen to over and over and over.

I'm just spitballing here. Loud does get annoying but that is usually the result of two factors, low end equipment or crappy recordings and believe me that the recording is the most important, **** in, **** out, but if it's quality and I do mean QUALITY loud just gets better the more you turn it up!. Some folks just don't like loud period, I get it! I for one cannot concentrate when I need to if the volume is high but at the end of the day I want to wiggle my toes.

I purchased these, they have amazing sound and take input from my phone or my TV. I mostly stream all my music. My garage is 1000sqft and all the sound and base I need. keep them up on top of my cabinets. https://www.ebay.com/itm/352993162270

I saw this post and ordered a set—- great sound and a great price! Had an impromptu dance party with my 15 yr old and exposed her to The Allman Brothers!

Echo running to older Onkyo receiver powering two Polk RTi A1s. I have two more speakers left over from home audio system but don’t need them.

Sounds amazing in my 3 car garage. All voice controlled.

Simple and very effective.

I also have two pretty awesome home theatre setups in the house. I love watching movies on a quality tv with good surround and bass.

What are you all using to get music from your phone to the system? I don't like bluetooth for several reasons but mostly range. I used to really like the google chromecast audio, that worked great but they don't make it any more.

What other options are out there? I have sonos in the house but don't like all their restrictions on what you can and can't play through it. The chromecast let you send anything you wanted to it and it kept playing if the phone left the area.

I use an old spare Iphone with 128gb storage mounted to a zero bit loss DA convertor (DAC) base on it keeping it powered up and connected to a vintage modified Musical Fidelity kW-500 amp with a pair of Monitor Audio Gold monitor speakers (got very lucky as both were given to me), they're positioned and mounted to produce super clean stereo imaging sound (and rattle free) in most of the shop. I use Wi-fi on iPhone to receive any online music and tap into the house hi def music server and its playlist. Amazon gave me 2 years of free unlimited music so been using that a lot lately, its not bad but then it was free (so far). Sounds like a pricey set up but really didn't cost me much. Just need to plan ahead on what you need and keep your eyes and ears opened. It's important to keep it simple and convenient to use and access.

Think quality over quantity.

I also echo what others say about being careful with the bass, its' very true that more is not necessarily better regardless of those driving around trying to entertain the whole neighborhood as they drive by. I would be annoyed in my shop with vibrating and rattling; most shops are not exactly audiophile tuned and dampened sound rooms, quite the opposite; theyre typically a harsh rattling echo chamber.

In my workshop, I have a mishmosh of things. Kenwood KR-4600 receiver I bought new in the 1970s. A pair of Dana Audio bookshelf speakers I bought for my parents in the '90s and inherited back from them when they died. Another pair of bookshelf speakers I built myself around the same time. A bluetooth adapter so I can pair my phone to it.

When I turn on the receiver, the bluetooth powers up and my phone pairs. Then I stream from Emby or Pandora. Usually Emby, because it's my own collection. If I get a phone notification, the audio ducks for a moment to allow it. I consider this an advantage, although I can see where some people might not want it.

I'll tell you what not to do..... Don't use a streaming service that asks for input.

I have a PC in my shop... I had it playing Amazon Music the other day when I was installing gable fans.

I climb up on the scaffolding and the music stops... I can see that Amazon Music had a pop up that said "Are you still listening? Click here to resume"... I said some bad words, climbed back down and switched to playing music from my plex server instead.

(I like to listen to streaming music to discover new stuff, but from now on I will save that for the car and just play mp3s in the shop)

This I would like to hear!

What DAC are you using?

Love the MA stuff. I lived in England for a few years and was listening heavily at the time - so much new stuff (in the mid 90's) compared to options I was familiar with in the US. Ruark, Mission, Royd, Meridian to name a few...

If anyone hasnt posted this yet:

-go to a decent local Goodwill/Value Village thrift store.

-buy decent amp/speakers for cheap!

-use older PC connected to amp loaded with thousands of songs, stream from the net, Spotify, etc.

My 12x16 shed has a 5.1 setup that would rival top end home systems and done very cheaply from really good used parts.

I also have the smart speaker for asking Google random stuff and a 42" LED TV hanging off the wall to watch videos/learn/be entertained.

Stuff gets dusty in a small shop but nothing a battery powered blower cant fix!

Did some CL or FB Marketplace shopping and found four 26" high 70s style speakers, and a Sony Surround Sound receiver. I use an old Galaxy S4 phone as the receiver to get Pandora or Spotify input. I get to choose what I like, mostly 70s classic rock. I bought decent gauge speaker wire on ebay and routed the speaker wires in the walls when I was doing the electrical. Got a speaker in each corner of the garage hanging from the trusses.

Easy to add a Bluetooth Dongle input if desired to link the music files on the smart phone. The Sony Surround receiver also has multiple input ports for devices.

Most garages have terrible acoustics. I like bass I can feel. It took a hell of a lot more power and speakers to achieve the sound I wanted in the garage, verses what you'd need in an average living room.

Right now I have two small Cerwin Vegas above my bench for when I don't want to disturb people (late at night, or whatever).

But when I am ready to blast, I have 4 15" speakers, one in each corner up on shelves, and a 21" subwoofer on the floor.
Would like to see pics of your sub setup. Thinking about something similar.

I am currently using an old Vizio soundbar from my house, linked to a Cerwin Vega powered 15" sub, and it does more than I need. Never turn it up even halfway when I am alone and cranking it! Got this idea from a few shops I used to visit.....takes up little space, and provides good sound for what it is.

It's nothing spectacular, it's just a Madison 21" sub in a home-made enclosure that I found for sale locally. The enclosure came with it, but it's too small. But with lumber prices where they are, I'm just using it as-is for now. I sealed it and insulated it, and it sounds pretty good for what it is. It was ugly, so I threw some carpet on it, and used some wood scraps to trim out the front, lol:

I just power it with a big PA amp:

And Just for fun, if you ever wondered how big a 21" woofer is, here are two pics of it next to 15" woofers:

Bootleg?

I understand the legal limit for nonlicensed fm transmission is quite low.

I had a sirius car radio that would transmit to the house, but after it came back from repair of a bad screen, I could barely pick up its signal in the same car. It seems they got in trouble with the fcc & had to dial them down to the legal limit. I ended up hard wiring it it was so bad. I missed that power.

I've been kicking around the idea of getting atleast one Mackie Thump 15bst powered BT speaker. They are supposed to be on the lower spectrum of professional DJ/Club type setup. Check them out

Several years ago I bought a Sony Kitchen Radio from WalMart, it get AM/FM and it plays CD's. The audio quality is good enough for my Saw Mill ears.

Older Non bluetooth receiver, into a speaker bar with a sub from a TV, and a bluetooth adapter to work with my phone. New shop will get the same stuff but with a computer instead of using my phone.

And I found wireless earbuds work perfect for the shop and working around the house.

I have gone the same route a lot of others on this forum have, and I have a bunch of equipment i picked up for free/pawn shop prices ... I use an Alexa Echo Dot as the input into a Marantz Sr7200 receiver. That receiver feeds two Cerwin Vega E-715 speakers and two matching 15 inch subwoofers (dont remember the model # on those) and it absolutely cranks when I want it too.... the advantage of having the large drivers is that even on low volume listening, I can still get very clean, deep bass without rattling everything off the walls and shelves!

So I'm slowly working towards the finish line of well... Finishing the inside of my shop.

And with that comes the great responsibility of having install a kick *** stereo system. I have an idea in my head that I will discuss for feedback below, but first I thought I would see what everyone else is doing.

I read some stuff on here but it is all over the place. What I'm looking for is something beyond a boom box with subwoofers, but not a 10k cinema suite. New or used and preferably something I can run a TV through.

What have you guys come up with?
I've got a music "corner". Occasionally my neighbors listen to really good music, too...whether they like it or not.

Glad to see this thread continues to get replies. I still haven't purchased anything but am also still hung up on installing the speakers in the faux walls blocking in my mezzanine.

Some of you guys made some good points and brought me back to my car speaker days in the 90's. Valid points on the box and porting. So to remedy that for my situation I would either fabricate a new box or more likely cut the face of the old box and mount them to the wall. The walls themselves will be simple 2x4 36" o/c framing with the same silver barn tin as my wainscoting. I'll bolt or rivet some 3/4" plywood to the back of the tin and mount the box and speakers to that.

I'd like to get a stack with at least 12" sub woofers. Think its time to start looking at the used market.

I like the diversity in the setups everyone has shown. Keep them coming.

That Peavey amp is nice ! always liked their guitar gear.

that little mag/voice coil on the 15" is like a tweeter setup tho. lol

I bet the 21" sounds sic on the Peavey, if you don't turn it up tooo much tho.

If you got the HP (watts) you need the voice coil and magnet to match, if it's going to survive very long at full throttle anyway.

I have an older Onkyo surround sound amp I used for years, but I ran across an older Panasonic amp that works well enough for the shop so the Onkyo got cleaned up and it with a couple speakers is in my office with a Bluetooth receiver so I use it for computer speakers! 100 watts per channel computer speakers! I need to buy a sub for the office to get the rumble I want!

Out in the shop is the Panasonic amp with a pair of speakers I have had for decades and an old smart phone that connects to my wifi and I stream music from Sirius or YouTube.

I am still finishing my interior as well. put my Wharfedale towers in with my cabinets. I run an old Yamaha receiver with a Bluetooth adapter plugged into one of the inputs.
The sound is great, I plan to put two more speakers on the other end of the garage near the ceiling aimed toward the workbench/cabinets area.Capture.JPG

I have a Bose S1 Pro with a Sirius XM receiver hooked to it. It wasn’t cheap by any means but I like the portability with 10+ hr battery and how loud it gets. Sometimes pair it to phone to stream, but 99% of the time in the garage it’s playing something on sirius.

For me I prefer no music or any additional noise when I work on my vehicles. I spent 40 plus years in high noise industrial settings and have some hearing damage plus in my shop music just never sounds correct I think it is because it is a metal pole building does not help.
I just prefer to not listen to music and since I am retired my old 1966 Ford Falcon’s engine running is music to my ears.

Old car stereo stuff (20+ years old) in a system still in progress. Mounted the head unit in a shelf, amps on the wall (1 amp working with components dropped into some simple sealed boxes, 1 amp waiting for the sub solution):

51193776876_67c3871561_b.jpg

51193776791_b5dc539baf_b.jpg

Sound quality is very good, in my opinion. Volume is all there too.

It fits the 'garage' theme and is updated with the simple bluetooth adapter. I listen to radio, CD's and mostly Spotify. Currently looking for a sub solution, someone above mentioned pawn shops which is a great idea.

I am curious, what those of you using 5.1 systems in the garage for?
Do you have a video system as well?
5.1 systems are great for movies but not so much for music or radio.
A 2.1 system will sound much better for music or radio. Unless you jus have an extra 5.1 sitting around, and even then most amps can select 3.1 for your music pleasure.
