What do you guys have for shop stools? I am in need of one that is adjustable and has a backrest.

I love the look of the vintage tractor seats but those are pricey!

Looking to keep it under $50 but willing to spend more if the quality is there.

Thanks

Apologies for the lousy photo. It wasn't taken to focus on the stool but it's the only one I have. I got this cheapo stool at a "Pic 'n Save" - now they're called, "Big Lots". I think I only paid like $15 for it.

I picked up the craftsman one at Sears. I too wanted one with a backrest. So far I love the thing.

By being the last guy at a school auction, I got about 40 of the gray steel stools with fiberboard seats, a few black with plastic seats, and two or three gray steel wiith back. I paid $5 for the whole pile. I've been giving them to friends for years and I still have a few in the attic.

Funny you should post this because I was about to post something similar. My neighbor somehow got his hands on about 20 of these types of chairs (probably a school auction as well) and ended up giving me 5 of them for free. They're comfortable enough, especially at that price and since most of my shop time is spent standing anyways.

edit: Mine are the grey steel with an adjustable back rest.

I picked up one of the Cman stools also and liked it. When they went on sale again for $50, I picked another one up.

Then I caught some Traveller (store brand) stools being clearanced at TSC for $30 each so I bougth a pair of them. 4 stools for teh garage might be overkill but in case some friends stop over I have a place for 4 asses to be planted.

I have no doubt the Cman and Traveller stools are made in the same place.

Whatever you don't get the HF stool. Granted I use mine a ton, but it's literally falling apart. The covers that hold the bearings for the wheels have been popping off. It still works and for $20 I will use it till it doesn't roll anymore.

I will probably get the SO one with the mid height back rest and wheels next. My driver had them for $60 a couple months back. Not sure what it normally is.

Funny, i would say just the opposite. I have two of the HF round stools and think their great. I have used them for years and for $20 I have more than gotten my moneys worth.

I also picked up one of the traveler stools from Tractor Supply. Its fine for $30, but nothing to get too excited about. Its also very tall, I'm 5'11" and have never raised it above the lowest setting.

Funny-I just took the Craftsman stool apart this morning. Adding some more padding to it. Christmas present, as it was felt my perfectly good stool I scabbed together at work back in '78 was "old" and I deserved a new stool. I didnt mention I had just built another stool just a tad shorter.

I put it together and set up in shop to not hurt any feelings, but have to admit, slowly started migrating toward it and now use it exclusivly. The foot rest is really nice as is the back rest. But its the swivel when using at the bench that makes it (or simular) easier. I think they paid like 35.

I bought a couple of the Craftsman a couple years ago at $50 on sale. That being said, that NT looks better since it has that upper ring to help stabilize the legs and the cost is the same.

A shop stool has been on my 'to-build' list for ages! 'Can' you see why?? :D I'd like to either build a nice wood one sometime or weld something up, just for the practice.

The few times I've done anything sitting at my bench, it has been on a set-up like this (sitting on the board across the can)-----not the most comfortable thing in the world, and the can seems to buckle a bit--must be cheap plastic! :S

The romantic hills of central Umbria, Italy,
I have one that came out of the electrician's basement "cave" at our old 30's building before it got razed... thing has to be pre-war era, repainted it and works great.

I also have an old (1960's?) architects chair for my reloading bench - looks like the cross between an office chair and a barstool. That thing is comfortable!

It shouldn't be that hard to weld up a basic fixed height stool, right? That's what I always start off saying before all my projects, anyway! I have some scrap angle iron---I might just see what I can fab up. Sounds like a good exercise.

Here is a stool that I am making a replica of. Hope to have it done soon:

I picked up 5 classic shop stools from an auction at the Indpls. Public Schools.. (the second picture of the black stools has a 3rd brother in my garage)... I love these classic wood top stools.. I remember them from the "lay out bench" in my machine trades class at John Adams High School in South Bend.. thank you Mr. Robert Thomas (Tom) Berry!!

Another vote for the Craftsman stool. I picked one up on sale for $50 before the holidays and have been very happy with it.

I also picked up the matching mechanics stool on sale for $20. Both are great!

I have the HF short adjustable bucket seat, 2 $7.50 each padded barstools on closeout from OSJ, 2 steel milk crates and a large assortment of plastic Lowes and HD 5 gal buckets. All work well and have served me for years.
