Home Depot has clear plastic boxes called "shoe boxes" which happen to be about shoe box size for .99 each.

You can see what's inside. Snap on lid and stack.

Good deal. ..

They make nice storage containers for model cars that are in the process of being worked on. Keeps all the parts together and dust-free, and easier than trying to open and close the cardboard box the models come in.
That being said, its been years since I did anything with model cars but I've got some stashed away in those clear $.99 shoe boxes.

I have a few of them at the fire station. I use one for showering stuff instead of a shaving bag, it's easier to get something out of it and easy to clean. Another for boot polish and misc stuff. I have a third one in my gear locker downstairs. It hold a nut/bolt container for misc fixes, a few tools, safety glasses and a few other things.
