Today i was called onto the carpet because some one asked me if i had a hit list. Now about me, im the quiet nerdy mechanic that every shop has. I dont say much and try to get along with every one. So here are my do's.
Joke around , and keep it good natured.
Deez nuts jokes are always funny
Stay working while you talk smack
Some dont's
Dont get to personal
Stay away from gfs, wifes and especially children.
Try not to talj about the same thing to often
Dont stop working
Dont get mad
Dont talk about having a hit list. Even if its someone else doing the talking squash that dead. People are kinda up tight about stuff like that.

Well those are a few of mine lets here some of yours.

I'm not friends with anyone at work either.

I will not talk politics, religion or my personal life at work.

Having been in the unfortunate position of having someone use some part of my personal life in attempt to get me fired, I learned that one the hard way.

Lol no comment. The fd up thing is that i didnt even start it. Some douch i work with who cant shut up kept asking me if i had a hit list. This one dude stayed home from work because his name came up. What i actually said was he was not worth a bullet. I was trying to blow the guy off but he just kept talking about the ****.

I consider some of the guys at work friends, meaning I hang out with them outside of work too. Kind of hard not to be friends when I've been working with some for close to 16 years now.

I'll one-up you on the religion or politics, I never talk about them at all, anywhere.

yea i've been burned a couple times with co-workers.
ive been at my current dealership for 17 years, and at the previous dealer or 10 years.

i agree, religion & politics arent subjects that i discuss..

for me, it's much simplier to keep home and work seperate.

i dont do much "hanging out" even with the couple people i consider my friends.
work and life in general seem to keep happening.

Re: Shop talk the do's and don's

I try to stay out of the drama as well, I also try to just keep working but other guys come up and just want to chat but at $140 an hour labor rate I try to keep working. I try to get along with everyone at work, we joke, but these are people I would not hang out with outside of work. There is one guy at work who has diarrhea of the mouth and at times will repeat the same joke over and over and over. Then there is the cranky old timer who has less than a year before retirement and he is constantly bitching about how effed up the place is, he's been there 29 years and he is just figuring this out now? Sometimes I want to drive a seal pick in each ear so I don't have to hear it.

This is why I don't let everything out at work. Certain guys yeah I can kid with or whatever, those are the ones I truly work with. The rest of the world, they get the business side of me, which when they see me out after work and see me cutting up or telling my dumb jokes and see that I'm a fun guy, they often ask why I act like I do at work. Which my answer is it keeps me out of trouble.

One of the main reasons I miss working in a shop is that you can joke and talk guy **** without a care ( when no customers are around). I have to be aware of my surroundings here at the office now since there are females around and it's supposed to be a " professional environment":puke:

I have a few...
....don't use other peoples tools and if you absolutely have to, make sure that person is okay with it and make it a point to hand it back to them as soon as you're finished using it.

...Dad's old jack stands "always" prevented accidents, but if they're over 20 years old, or damaged in any way, get new ones.

..."the squeaky wheel gets the grease!" Keep your nose clean, mind your own business, and do the best you can...and the other guy will get scrutinized more often.

...Never, EVER, accept a supervisors position in a shop full of women!

I think that covers it.

Middle of nowhere.
My 17 years at on dealership was like working in a ZOO. Hell, I might have been the ringleader!!

The last 9 years we had Friday night union meetings. They kinda went like this. If tech was pissed at the service manager or anyone else the could tell them so and no one could get fired. We never let it get to the point of fists thrown.

Now this all took place around mass amounts of cold beer. We even had customers show up at 5pm on Friday with food for us. We always had cold beer. As I took it upon myself to have the cooler stocked and iced at 4:30pm.

Now if I had employees that acted like I use to, I would fire them on the spot. Different time then, than today.
