I am building a new shop (27x24') to replace an old worn out carport. I am getting close to time to trim it out and start to put siding up. As far as siding I am going to use Hardi-plank. I wanted to trim it out with wood from my friends sawmill. I have my choice of oak, pine or poplar. My question is am I just inviting years of battling the carpenter bees if I use lots of freshly dried wood trim and accents in shops finish? I love the more rustic look, but I do not want to deal with carpenter bees for years to come. Any advice?

Same - use the Hardi. No problems with bees carrying hammers and saws around here, but the Hardi hold paint better and may well get you a discount on insurance.

From past threads here I believe hardi has some pretty stringent installation requirements if you want to have their warranty. I'd look there first. But, I love real wood as much as most people but no way I'd trim hardi w/ wood. Use their trim too.

I am going to say yes. I am up in Kingsport, and the bees came a-runnin' for any exposed pine on my shop. There may be some woods they wouldn't bother, though. I don't know.

I've used Hardie trim on a couple outbuildings with good results. On the house I used Azek pvc window and corner boards. I hated it while it was going up. It kinda offends the sensibilities, but I just hand washed the whole house last week and got a good look at all of the window trim and corner boards. Installed in '13, they look brand new. I trimmed my MA house in pine. Primed and painted prior to install. Nice looking job. 4 yrs later I could put my finger through it.

I would stay with Hardie products and secondly the Azek products. Why have the hassle of repairing and painting wood trim every 5 or 10 years.

I'm in the south. We have carpenter bees that will eat their way right through paint and primer. As much as I like the look of wood on the outside, even painted, the fiber cement products have some benefit to long term performance and reduced maintenance.
