Shop vac question

I have this older Sears wet/dry shop vac and carpet cleaner – Kenmore Powerspray, # 175.899000 . When I last used it worked really well. The filter is now dried up and detached from the plastic ring that holds it in place (see pics). If it try to use it the filter will probably get torn apart and possibly sucked into the motor. Without the filter the motor is exposed to dust, dirt and probably kill the motor.

I am also thinking of using it as the suction for a dust collector for my new (to me) blast cabinet.

I would like to find a replacement filter, but have come up with nothing on web searches. I could possibly find filter material but attaching it to the plastic ring would/could be a problem. Any suggestions?

Thank you,
L

From my experience with shop vacs, the filter is only there to filter out the exhaust; the vacuum it self does not need it. I've been using my shop vac without a filter because I get more suction without it. I only use it if I was vacuuming some fine dust like drywall dust.

Are you sure that's the correct part number? Because usually whenever I enter a Craftsman part number into Google, I'll get the searspartsdirect site popping up.

My bad, I put an extra zero so it is 175.8990o I also noticed when I checked that the last zero is smaller than the one before it so it may be an "o". I google it that way.

Just checked searspartsdirect and found the vac. No parts available. So back to my original question - Any suggestions on finding or creating a filter?

Thank you,

The last time I fixed an old vacuum I went to the vacuum cleaner store and they had bulk material that we cut a filter from. So try the local vacuum cleaner store, may a sew vac store.

Calling that shop vacuum "older" is like what realtors call a "fixer". A bit of a stretch, both describing something that is the last of its kind in existence.

I wish you luck, but I think I'd bet on a newer model if I was going to build it into my shop plans.

Duh, shoulda thought of that myself. None local, called a few in big city and may have 1 that could be willing to tinker. Guess I was just wanting to do a DIY thing.

Thank you,
