Shop vac troubleshooting advice

I have a Shop vac QSP 35 that just died on me. It had been running loud the last couple times I used it, but I just figured the filter was getting full and needed to be replaced. Last night it cut off in the middle of use and won't turn back on or make any noise.

I'm going to tear it apart tonight and test the switch and look around. What steps should I take to troubleshoot this? I have a meter which I plan to use to test the switch.

If the switch tests okay I would pull the motor apart and check the carbons. If too worn they may be replaceable. Depending on the original cost and current condition you need to consider how much time and money you want to spend. Shop Vacs are frequently on sale.

How do you check the carbon? What do you look for?

On cost/time, I agree. If a cause/solution isn't apparent, I'll dump it and purchase another. I'm trying to be better about at least attempting to repair something before junking it. Last week my electric impact stopped working in reverse. Fortunately I opened it and found the wire disconnected to trigger switch for a five minute fix. I'm hopeful...
