I ended up with the day off of school and kinda ugly to do much outside. I had built this to pass some time away. Not the neatest, but 100% functional. The screws go into wall studs of course and now my shop vac is always ready to go. I can clean out my car from where it's at, and I'll be getting an extension hose to reach anywhere in the garage. Also, of course I can merely pick it out and carry it anywhere it may need to go.

I was thinking about something similar, but a few steps further.

Like putting the Shop Vac outside in the same shed as the air compressor and then just have a fitting in the wall. Wire a switch right next to the fitting and there you go. Like a built-in home vac system!

The downside is a lot of hose is necessary to reach every part of the shop. But it would be quiet.

MD, Why not add a lid that would enclose it? It would be quieter!

Don't wanna add a lid as it will make it that much more work to remove from the box. With the extension hose, I'll be able to get to my wife's car and mine while both are parked inside. But, there are still many times that I'd like to remove it from the box to blow dust off of the back porch or leaves from the driveway. Placing it up there where I did frees up valuable floor space and now it's ready to go at anytime!

Totally enclose it and line it with sheet foam on the inside to dampen the sound!
No can do. The amount of air going in the hose must come out. The enclosure MUST have an adequte opening to let air out of it.

Or stick the exhaust hose out of the enclosure somewhere.

I like the idea. But since the hose is so high up on the canister, I'd devise an apparatus to secure the vacuum in the nest to prevent it from being pulled out.

Just my opinion...

I have had something similar to mdsmith11's version for a couple years now, the difference being that I used an old metal milk crate instead of a wooden box (mine is a 5 gal. model, so it fits perfectly in the crate). It hangs on two angled (large) screws, so it comes off the wall when needed. The vac tools store in the corners as his do. I just leave the vac in the crate when using it, which keeps it standing upright (which it doesn't like to do on it's own), and it is easier to carry around that way also, since the crate has built-in handles. Not as fancy as drbill's, but it gets the job done.

Not trying to screw up a good thing here, but won't you start having a drop in suction power adding on extra hose lengths, especially if it is corrugated, it will have a lot of turbulance and pressure (suction loss) unless maybe smaller in diameter? Depending on the model size, would be worth checking out.

The wall unit I bought from Sears has an 18 ft hose, smaller in diameter than the short one on my old floor model. They also don't recommend going any longer. So... I guess the lenghth and diameter of the hose is dependent on the HP rating of the machine.
