I have a 10 year old Shop-Vac that I bought at WalMart. I've used it for my sandblasting cabinet (gritty dust) as well as my mill and lathe (metal chips and oil) in addition to vacuuming the garage floors and cleaning out cars etc. I've also used it to **** up water from my basement floor. Still works great.

I bought the $49 Lowes unit the other day. Will be delivered tomorrow.

My plan is to dedicate the old one to mill/lathe cleanup and hard pipe it. The oily/greasy stuff does a number on the flexible hose.

Not a big fan of Shop Vac either. I have shop vac, two Rigids, and an old Craftsman (a small one at that). Shop Vac has the least suction and the motor had to be replaced under warranty two months after purchasing it. The replacement motor sounds like it's on its last leg too with just normal use.

I have one that's branded "dirt hawg". I've used it for everything including cleaning out the grill, sucking gallons of water from my flooded garage, cleaning out the air exchanger, sucking wood dust, etc etc. and it still works like a charm. I also have a 10+ year old smaller shop vac that's been through hell and back and still works like new.
I notice Stihl has come out with one that I'm sure is just a rebranded one but they way they have it set up seems good. may have to pick one up when the local dealer has his big yearly sale and dedicate the big dirt hawg to hooking up to my saws.

I own the 6 gallon Shop-Vac, so far after 2 years of homeowner use it's been great. It was $30 new @ Lowes. It's small enough to still be maneuverable but big enough that you wouldn't ever want to fill it completely anyway.

I don't know anything about the HD brand but I would be hard pressed to spend $100 on a Shop-Vac. They are just a plastic bucket with a blower motor attached, very simple.
