I've had some interest on putting up a metal building and finishing it on the inside fairly nice. I'd love to do that as well as have a large shop in the same building. i would like to have a good sized living quarters 1,600 sf or so. The more I think about it the more I like it. I'd rather have a couple of extra acres over maybe a upper end house. My goal is to be debt free when I get close to retirement and I think this is a viable option. Kinda build it up as I go. Seems the square foot cost is much cheaper this route too.

Has anyone here done this or are you currently doing this? I would love opinions and pictures.

Thanks

Although mine has only 550sf of living space as a weekend retreat, it might give you some ideas. Link in signature line.

After you check your local zoning, put in a call to your health insurance carrier. See if there's a cap on your coverage for cancer.

I can understand the appeal of this, but exposing your lungs to airborne carcinogens on a full-time nightly basis seems, well, not smart. :)

(That said, I live in Los Angeles, which has terrible air quality. And I breathe it all night, every night.)
