Shopmaster 6 inch Jointer-Planer

Before my Dad passed away, he gave me this jointer-planer. It's been collecting dust for years until I found the time to check it out. I've found the Operating Instructions and Parts List online and now that I've retired I have some time to see what it can do.

The blades are not in the best shape and I thought it would be best to replace them. I haven't looked for replacements yet but I'm having quite a bit of trouble just removing them from the cutter head. There are 5 set screws at each blade. Three appear to hold the "gib" or wedge in place and I've removed these without trouble. The other 2 are used to adjust the blade up or down. I've only been able to rotate these screws some but haven't been able to remove them.

I've tried some penetrating oil to loosen but no luck so far. I removed the indeed table to get better access to the wedge and blade - see the photos. The instructions say the blades should be "free" once the 3 set screws are removed.

Somewhere I’ve seen a picture of this assembly, and there is a not obvious way to get it loose. “Something like: the set screws are driving the wedge out, so remove all screws and tap the wedge in”.

Let me look a bit before you follow this idea.

These guys seem to concur. One guy says try to adjust the blades “out”, but it could be your blades are stuck too tight.

Hardwood punches only please, or Delrin, don’t want to damage the wedge.

I still havve my ShopSmith jointer in the box - 35 years after I bought it.

Thanks for your note - but mine is Shopmaster not Shop Smith. I don't think Shopmaster is around anymore. Shop Smith has a 4" jointer and mine is 6". I'll have to do some digging to find another source for replacement blades. If I strike out I might find a source that can sharpen them for me. Thanks again!

Yeah, sorry about that. When I saw the thread title today, I did my best Homer Simpson realizing I'd screwed up.

No problem, thanks for trying to help. I do have some good news though. I was able to do enough disassembly that I was able to pry the wedge and blades off!! So next step is to get new blades, reassemble and put it to use. Hope Dad would be proud.

Looks like your model is a JO-400. This one says it has Wisconsin Knife Work (WKW) knives:
