Shopping for a used air compressor

I am beginning to shop for a used 5 hp air compressor. I’m looking for an older quality unit. Something like a Quincy, Saylor-Beall (I live in Michigan), Champion, Curtis Toledo, IR type 30, etc.

One thing that concerns me is that many of the used compressors for sale are not hooked up. Is it foolish to consider a compressor without being able to see it run? Any suggestions of how to assess it without turning it on?

For example, I have a lead on a 60-80 gallon Horizontal off brand compressor (maybe Speedaire) with a Champion r15 pump. It was used at home only, by the seller’s father. The father moved, offered the compressor to the son, He took it, but he never hooked it up. How much is it worth, considering I can’t run it. Seller insists it is in working order, but can’t prove it.

If you can’t see it working, either don’t buy it or try to get it super cheap. A decent pump or motor can cost nearly as much as a new compressor. If it is operational, you should ask to see it operate from a completely empty tank. Time how long it takes to fill and listen for strange noises. Check the condition of the pump oil too. These things could indicate a problem. Check the tank for rust too, especially around seams.

Seeing your location, I'd wait and watch the inventory at HGR Surplus.

If you get it home and it doesn't work to your specifications, you just drive it back.

Yes, this is a medium pain but its a full money-back guarantee vs. large pain and complete loss of purchase funds.

Like anything you have to try determine why the seller is selling. They're probably not selling their very best compressor. Estate sales would be good places to go, imo, if a person wanted to stay local.

Seems to me your in saylor beall country.
5hp 705 is a great pump.Parts a available.
Crank bushings and wrist pin bushings are a wear item. Those with a worn crank ,you’ll have a chit-chit bang-bang.Cranks are $250 if it’s out of tolerance unless oversized bearings are available.
Where are you looking ? Craigslist, market place?
You really need to hear and inspect before buying.
Pulling inspection plate and measure the crank is like 10-15 minutes for me.
Rent a generator.
