I gotta thing for tool rolls. Most "late model" tool rolls seem to be lacking in both style and substance, but I own a ton ofmilitary tool rolls from WWII and Vietnam eras. ...

The large fold-out workmat and the country of origin sold me on it.

I think I just found a forthcoming birthday present from my kids!

My wife bought me a really lovely suede /leather tool roll for my birthday a few years back, its great but not that huge in temrs of the nuber of pockets. It currently lives in my daily driver Blazer but it's really intended to go in my 67 Chevy C10. I really like that canvas one but it is quite pricey. I do love the enclusion of a pocket for band-aids etc, how many times have you had to do an emergency roadside fix and ended up skinning a knuckle, for me it usually seems to be catching them on the end of a hose clamp.

My Mom made some for my Dad and his brother, probably 50 years ago. I think I still have a couple with some of my uncle's tools.

That flap over is the important part. The bucket boss stuff (I think that's the one I have) don't got that so stuff can slide out if you carry it wrong (particularly extensions and larger combo wrenches. Hammer? Forget about it!

Takes too much work to make yourself (and have it look good) believe me on that. I usually make assorted specific jimjams out of jean remnants and just wrap it with a rubber band (actually one of those hair ones) which works better than it sounds. Real good for punches and "mission specific" hardware. If you don't care what it looks like you can make them fairly easily just take two pieces of fabric and sew them together on three sides (leaving one open), then invert it (make the outside the inside) then make a solution so it doesn't slide out (velcro, snaps, etc), if you do a zipper make sure to sew that in before you flip it, if you do a cinch with cord make sure you don't sew the two vertical lengths all the way to the top before you fold over the fabric to make a cord channel also leave a 1/4" (or so) on each side of the fold over so the cord has somewhere to go. I just added this info in case anyone wanted to try and make some simple pouches of their own, obviously it's easier with a sewing machine but also fairly easy to do by hand sewing (time consuming though).

Thanks for linking to your JJ post Ryan I've been considering re working my existing tool carry for our 46 and the idea of a tool roll or a bag inside of the ammo box to keep down rattles is a great one!

The few rolls I use in my service truck I ordered from a place called Sav a Jake. They sell mainly for fire rescue but they do have some rolls and they are well made a very sturdy. I put nut drives and wire tools in them. I have one of the HF rolls that I put the wrenches in. My angle wrench came from a place called V-8 tools and are in thier own roll but if they were no I would use the sav a jake rolls.

a while back i was considering (and still am) making a tool roll from one of these. The only reason i would consider making vs buying is that i can custom sew the pockets for what i need. wont fit the bigger wrenches but i still like the fact that most of the work is done for me and the straps that go around the waist function to tie the roll together like the ones you buy.

Honestly I like the harbor freight ones. I have 2 that I keep in my truck and they seem to hold up well after rattling around for a couple years.

I bought one of these 18 months ago and it has held up well.

Coach

I have the nylon Arsenal roll, costs about the same on Amazon, it's pretty sturdy and blue-grey (I've stopped wearing white shirts because I grime them up; lord knows what I'd do to a white tool roll). I'm trying to whittle a hand box of tools down to the bare essentials for my truck.

That seems like a hell of a good price.

It's made in Taiwan, but, yeah, still a good deal.

Hi guys!

Thanks for all the kind words and we really appreciate the support Jori is giving us at Epstein's! I use to spend a lot of time in their store in Kansas City before retiring out in Colorado. Still miss it!

I also appreciate all your candid observations on our gear and if I can answer any questions you may have, please lmk.

I thought I'd also share a recent forum conversation on made in the USA gear and share where all our components come from.

When we started Adventure Tool Company(ATC) it was incredibly important to us to not only make our gear in the US, but also source all the accessories pieces in the US. This took a lot of time, effort and expense to "in source" our gear, but it's been worth it now that we have our network of US suppliers and manufacturers!

Made in USA example (photo):
Waxed canvas - Ohio
USA Flag Label - Washington
Webbing - New York
Thread - California
Assembled - Colorado

Thought I would share the tool roll and an idea of the manufacturers of tools that comes with a Hagglunds BV206 from Sweden...

Cleveland. We rock.
Howdy folks. I was going to wait until I finished organizing my new roller box and post, but as I just spent an inordinate amount of time looking at rollups (a lot of that time here) I've got to chime in.

I figure I can fit 4 sets of wrenches in a drawer where 2 would fit with racks on top of each other. I also need to 'grab and go'.

The ATC rollups look fantastic! And I hope to upgrade to something like them sometime. But in the meantime I needed to roll my combo wrenches kinda right now! I kept checking ebay/CL for vintage but nothing came up fast enough.

I found Dickies 57007 small rollups for $8 at Sears or Amazon inc frt. (Sears'll do site to store on any amount no frt, Amazon is faster) http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GBSCROC/?tag=atomicindus08-20

I bought one to check out and they're pretty nice for the money, but of course made in China so in my mind an intermediate step.

I managed to fit my SAE set in it fairly nicely, 1/4" though 7/8". It appears to be made from roughly the same material as their outerwear, heavier canvas. The handle is nice for my application but does add some bulk. It also allows me to clip them to the outside of the sling bag I use for most junkyard runs. I'm not in love with the string ties, I'd much rather have the belts/clips. The pocket layout is very basic, 8 top 8 bottom, flaps on both sides.

Long and short I've got a couple more coming, for metric, flares/shorties, and large wrenches. I'll use small different colored zip ties to ID them. There is also a larger one, 57006, for about $10 but doesn't fit were I want them.

If I didn't like the Dickies I was going to try these: http://shop.vtarmynavy.com/tool-roll-organizer-p4925.aspx Super basic :)

I use this daily, and while it's expensive, it's proven itself, and the quality, thickness/durability of the material, and the flexibility to roll it up are awesome. Lifetime guaranteed too. I use it servicing retail displays, it makes it so all I carry are the roll and a small drill. I'll try to get some pics of it in action, but for now you can see it here:

Oh, and I love the pockets for smaller loose things like screws and small individual tools.

This thread caught my eye. The little Bonney ignition kit has been in our family forever. Got it from my Pops. Do not use it much. leather too fragile. Have no idea where it originally came from, or how old it is. Needs to just be cleaned up and placed in my museum glass display cabinet.
