I need a short 1-1/16 wrench. Most wrenches this size are pretty long. SO wants $67+tax for one. I'm cheap right now. I'm considering getting a Craftsman and cutting it down.

Thoughts?

If you don't need the leverage that a long handle provides, there's a good chance you don't need the quality that Snappy or Matco provide.

Hack off a HF wrench. It'll be good enough for any stress you can put on something that big with such a short handle.

You can also look at getting ' slugging wrench' they are generally not very long but heavy duty

We had a thread about a full set of Snap-On stubbys awhile back. I believe someone deducted that the fact that Snap-On was the only one making them over 1" was part of how they justified the $1,000+ price tag.

25 years ago I cut some Craftsman and Bonney combo wrenches from 15/16" to 1-1/8". I cut each wrench 5" long. I would buy used a wrench and then just cut it to the length you need. I wish I had not cut those Bonney Wrenches.

The Craftsman 1 1/16" x 1 1/8" open end wrench is $19.99 on their website... that 12" wrench, cut in half, will give you two 6" open end shorties..... Hard to beat; good old Craftsman quality and the warranty to boot! :willy_nil

Warranty on a wrench you cut in half?

I have the snap on 1-1/6, 1-1/8 and 1-1/4 wrenches at work. company paid for them but i rarely use them other than a backer on my impact. I would just cut down a cheap wrench and weld it together so you have a combination wrench.

I like this idea! 2 for the price of one 8)

Given the price of a snap on slugging wrench, I'd definitely be looking elsewhere. $80+...

I wonder if HF sells a wrench by it's self? I broke a 1-1/16 HF wrench and that caused my funny bone to go into a hood hinge! Wasn't very funny then. But I was really pulling on it and if I cut one down to 6 inches or so leverage will be so low It shouldn't ever break.

if i need a stubby wrench, i hit the flea mkt and find the cheapest double open end CM or SK wrench i can lay my hands on.

no need to sacrifice quality just cuz you're sacrificing a wrench.

honestly, many times i need a stubby wrench, an "el cheapo" brand will not take the torque i need to apply with a prybar or hammer.

This is one of the many reasons that Craftsman wrenches are so great. I've bent them to get into weird places, cut them down, etc. Buying the double end so you have two sizes of shorty wrenches is a great idea.

I think that's just about the capacity of a 6" adjustable, that's what I used in a similar situation in the past.

When I needed one similar for a specific job I found a slightly bent (name brand) one on Ebay for $3. Nobody wanted it apparently, so I got it for the starting bid, cut it down, and now have an easy "third hand" to hold the large bolts that hold the wheel weights on my tractor rims. :)
