Short air line on air tools

I have a quick question and I tried searching, but I couldn't find an answer.
While I was looking through the "Show me your toolbox" thread I noticed some people stored their air tools with a short air line attached rather than putting the disconnect directly on the tool. I was wondering what the reasoning behind this was. Does putting the disconnect directly on the tool damage it, or is this easier to work with in some way?

Thanks!

Those would generally be 'whip' hoses with a swivel built in. Makes the hose easier to manage, and absorbs the vibration of the tool (impacts, air hammers, etc.) and hence prolongs coupler life. I use them on my air ratchets and impacts but not on my nailers (since those get stored in blow-molded cases when not in use, and the cases don't accomodate a whip hose). Also have them on the random orbitals.

Also some of the time the attached hose is a bit more flexible than the main air hose which makes it a bit easier to work with. That's why most of the impact guns that go over the wall during a pit stop have a "leader hose".
