Stupiest things, I am not working on cars now, I am taking apart light fixtures!

There is a set screw I need to loosen that stops the nut from turning, it is 1.5mm hex key, the thinnest one, but my hex key won't fit because even the shorter end is too long to get into that crevice. I don't want to cut my USA tools.. so I am going to HF later to get something disposible.. but am I using the right tool, do they make some special access key or something that is like 1/4" long on the short end?

Yes, there are. They're called stubbys. If you don't need them frequently, just cut off a worn out hex key to desired length.

Good hex keys in small sizes are pretty cheap. I would just buy another good one to shorten rather than risk frustration with a cheap junk tool in this case.

Be sure to not let it get too hot when you cut it.

We run into that a lot: we buy hex keys by the boxes of a hundred or so and just hack them into whatever we need. They're basically looked at as a consumable around here.

I've got a Bondhus 3/16'' that I've shortened for getting to the carburetor mounting bolts on a Briggs & Stratton.

I cut it with a Dremel cut-off wheel and then I got it plumb flat with a hand file. But I bought it by itself; I didn't cut one out of a set. ;)

I have this set from bondhus, the have the ball end so you can still turn them when the shaft is 25 degree off center mark. They are super tough and have a lifetime warranty (haven't needed to test it yet though). Bondhus also makes a ball end bit, so you might be able to use it on an offset ratchet screwdriver. I also have a one of their GorillaGrip Fold Ups torx set that I carry. I work on electronics (printers, scanners and pc's).

Lisle makes hex keys with a stubby end, real resonable, decent quality, get some before Lisle makes everything in China, like all the other sell outs.
