Shotblasting....(rental rant)

who knew that finding an equipment rental place that had a shotblaster would prove to be impossible in a major metropolitan area.....particularly frustrating given that posts indicate that HD has them in certain parts of the country....One major rental place has 2 but they are on indefinite loan to major construction companies with no estimated return date....unreal....

Since I am giving up on a rental....Does anyone know a DC area company that will shot blast a residential garage?? Internet searches are not turning up much....most of the garage "redo" companies in this area are focused on expensive cabinetry and racedeck type floor tiles and less on slab repair/prep/epoxy

I have 500sqft + with an old coating that needs to be removed. I have zero interest in handgrinding and a walk behind grinder seems less than ideal as compared to the shotblaster....

Alternatively, can anyone tell me if a walk behind 11" (or 22") concrete grinder or an 8" concrete planer would be easier/faster/produce best results? i need to remove old floor covering/paint and leave an 80 grit finish for new epoxy....

I rented a BlasTrac 9" walk-behind over the weekend (rent on Friday, return on Monday for the 24-hr rental price). They have multiple locations in the greater DC area. None of them rent them?

Location
Northern Virginia
D&B Rentals in Sterling, Virginia has a Blastrac available to rent. The single-disc Edco I rented from them did not completely remove an existing sealer. Followed-up with pressure washing and an acid etch and it's now good to go.

wow. thanks for posting the info. I was looking for shotblaster rental too. I called a couple HDs around but none of them have shotblaster. I just searched the machine name "BlasTrac" online and found their website. if you go there and you can find a lot more locations that have their blastrac available. I found several HDs showing up in the list. I'll give them a call tomorrow. I also checked the rental price on sunbeltrental website and the daily rental charge is $380 something. pretty costly.

in case someone else is also looking for BlasTrac rental. here is the link you can look for rental locations. http://www.blastrac.com/en-gb/distributor_locator_flash.aspx

this forum is great!!!

thanks for the tip on D&B rentals. Sunbelt says they have them but only at select locations...and none of those locations are in the DC area (or within 3 hrs of here).

while the edco grinder is cheaper, i m not going to risk it....i dont want to have to go back by hand....

does anyone want to share a wknd rental this coming wknd?? i m guessing that I will only need it for up to 4 hrs to do a 24x24 garage....

email me at [email protected]

called D&B rentals. very helpful. reserved the shotblaster for this wknd. $400 for the blaster, vac, shot and magnet. pick up friday, return sun AM. not cheap but at least it will be properly prepped and should only take a few hours...

THANKS AGAIN for the tip to call DF&B.

FYI NONE of the area HDs have it anymore even though Blastrac site lists them....

Yes, the SunBelt Rentals is a little on the costly side. It cost me about $500 bucks including shot-blaster, media (50 lb bag of shot), and all the damage insurance.

The positive is that it came with a vacuum system and magnet broom (the negative is that the vacuum was almost worthless and needed cleaning every 100-150 sq ft).

I rented it over a weekend for the 24 hr rate and it took me about half a day to do my 440 sq ft garage. Wish I could have found 2-3 friends to also do their garages at the same time to split the cost and have an extra set of hands or 2, but everyone around here (Chicago) sees the crappy rustoleum epoxy jobs peeling up due to winter salt and wear/tear and said they wanted to see it before they believe it.

Hopefully you can find it because it is definitely worth it. I had HUGE staining on a 3-0 y.o. floor from oil and many other unknown chemicals, rust, etc/ Stripped it all away and the BondTite (Wolverine primer) went down like a champ on it.

yep, not a single HD in the Chicago area carries them either. I have heard of some of the HD's in some southern states carrying them, but nothing around here either.
