Should I be concerned about dust collector?

Hello all,

Longtime lurker, first time poster.

I will be getting a new (to me) house in a month that has a workshop attached to the end of a third garage stall. The workshop has it's own heater but no A/C as of now.

My question regards setting up my dust collector. In order to reduce the fine dust in the workshop as much as possible, I am contemplating putting the dust collector in the garage and running the collecting pipe through the wall. I wonder though if that will pull too much heated (or cooled) air out of the workshop.

Has anyone put their collection system outside the workspace and encountered problems or is the volume of air not that big a deal?

The dust collector is 1Hp and around 500 cfm capacity. The workshop is 18 x 20 ft with 9 foot ceilings

You'll pull all the air out every 6.5 min, not the path I would take when the heat is running.

If your dust collector leaves a lot of fine dust in the air then you might be better off just plumbing it to the outside and running it only when you have a tool on. You can save. Bunch of space doing this since you only need the blower.

Not much help here but my Dust collector is outside the shop in its own little lean to type shed. I have never noticed a big change in temp but I have infloor heat so even having the overhead open for a bit does not cool it down much.

Thanks for the input. Perhaps the best route for more is to upgrade the bag on the collector to a finer weave and keep the air in the room

A possible bigger problem.. If OP has a vented gas heater, couldn't that neg pressure draw combustion exhaust gases into shop ? Marc

many dust collectors come with a bag that is of no real use; they are not fine enough to capture the dangerous dust. there are many places that sell fine bags to upgrade, usually a plastic bag on the bottom and a larger filter bag on top if you have the little portable style. remember to be effective the filter bag needs to build a cake of dust on the inside which doesn't really happen with the cheap bags from HF and the like...

Add a cyclone or drop container to your system. Then only fine dust will accumulate on the bags, and the system will be "closed" within your shop environment.

I have a Homebuilt dust collector. It is a 5 hp 1800 CFM. I use 2 Peterbilt truck air filters. My DC is a Pentz design cyclone. I dump the purified air back into the shop. The air actually starts becoming cleaner than it was prior to the DC being turned on. Yes, I do deal with the noise with a pair of earmuffs. My main concern was sucking the burnt fuel back into my home or shop through my natural gas hot water tank if the air was exhausted outside. I wasn't to concerned about my HVAC as it's pretty high efficiency. But, I could literally **** all the air out of my house in 18 minutes and it could be replaced through my hot water tank exhaust pipe and my stove exhaust pipe and five exhaust fan pipes if I exhausted outside. I do realize you're in a different situation (as mine is a basement woodworking shop).

Now to compare apples to apples, I have a 450 square-foot machine shop, welding shop. I do have a high-efficiency natural gas heater in that shop. When I'm welding and I turn on the 500 CFM exhaust blower well welding in the middle of the winter, (for me to actually achieve my CFM, I actually have to crack the garage door 1/4") I do still feel a bit of a chill . But I have about 20,000 pounds worth of cast-iron to obtain the heat. So once I shut the garage door with the heater running, it usually warms up pretty fast.

Matt - how expensive are those truck air filters? and where do you get them?

I have a cyclone setup as well and sourced my filter from an industrial supply company and it was quite expensive, based on pentz design criteria it is roughly a foot diameter and 3 ft. tall.

do you get the proper flow with those, and are they cost effective?

I'd love to have another option or at least an easier way to replace when needed. the industrial place made me order over the phone after setting up a business account since they don't really sell to the public...

I have a Peterbuilt truck dealership/repair in the city next to mine( about 10 minutes drive). I just walked in off the street and asked them to see their most popular filter sizes. He showed me three different style. I picked one of the three and it was about US$45 each. I asked him if he always keeps stock. He told me he likes to keep about 5 to 10 in stock at all time.
