Should I buy a big vise?

$200 OBO, thought it said 61CP or S1CP on the static jaw, cannot find proper model, but it looks huge if that's a standard 55 gal drum underneath.

Looks to be a beast. It is missing the pipe jaws and it looks like the handle was replaced. I probably would not buy it but then again I already have a big vise. Depends on how much you need something that big.

Simplex is a good brand; I have a little brother to that, a 3 1/2".
Missing pipe jaws, jaw faces kind of beat up- sounds high to me, but I expect more expert voices will be heard.

61CP means 6 1/4 wide jaw combination vise.

If really big vises are are rare in your area that is not to bad. Go there with $200, look it over good, bring up the missing pipe jaws and any other defects and try to make a better deal.

in case you haven't already bought it or it sold you might want to pull out the dynamic jaw out all the way and check out the threads. new handles were replacing broken or bent ones so it did have some tough use. also with missing pipe jaws who knows where they went.

on the plus side it is a nice big vise that has decent regular jaws from the pictures and i'm guessing it's a 55 gallon metal drum and not a tin can. decent buy at $100 if no cracks or any repairs we can't see and the rest of the value is how much you personally like it.

Desmond Simplex machinist vise nubers are easy to decode
First number is width of jaws in inches PLUS the Second number which is the width of the jaws in 1/4 inch increments.
Letters are style of of vise S = Swivel, P = Fixed (Permanent?) and CP is Combination (Combination Pipe?)

So the 61CP is a 6 1/4" combo vise, a 43S would be a 4 3/4" swivel and a 31P is a 3 1/4" fixed base base vise.

The guess of 165 pounds is probably fairly close, a 61S is listed at 145 pounds so a 61CP might be a bit heavier with the taller jaws.

Yes.

6" vises are not rare, but uncommon. But - that's not just a big 6" vise. That's a really beefy big jawed 6" vise.

You have to go with a checklist of things to look over though, making sure its in acceptable working order for you.

Point out that the handle is not original (ie the nut on end) and negotiate down the price.

But yeah, that vise is a monster !! Go for it.

Word of caution.... Buying a vise like that creates the problem of where to mount it... Which in turn can cause other projects to magically appear on the top of your to-do list. If you don't believe me read the intro paragraph to my welding table build in my signature. It will also answer your question of wether to buy the vise.

This thread (Vises of GJ) is like the proverbial forbidden fruit... Once you have taken a bite you will have your eyes opened and be forever banished to poverty as you chase the next elusive unicorn vise....

But, the hundred dollar question, is it worth the 600KM round trip? Man I want to stroke and feel it, but it's simply too far to oogle at . I'll have to make do with my Athol and my Ridgid pipe vise.

Gentlemen, I have purchased the vise in question, stripped it down and put it in the cleaning tank. I found other pictures on the internet and determined the length of the handle. The old bolt and nut they used for a handle has been replaced with 1040 medium carbon steel. I will be machining the balls for the ends next week. I doubt that I will be able to find the original pipe jaws for it; will likely make that also. Need to do some research on the type of metal and treatment process for the jaws. Any suggestions?

Brother Scott will solve most of your problems...


He can't do anything about import taxes, VAT, border bribes, etc...


But he can make you some new jaws, if he can come up with a pattern...

There is a member on here KMCscott I think, that makes vise jaws. I'd try to get in contact with him if you are still looking for a set of jaws.
