Those should work fine. There will be some places a impact 12 point won't work. You can get chrome one's for that. I haven't worked on diesels for about 5 years, but if I remember right the sizes won't be over 3/4, and it maybe just one or two sizes anyway.

Either way, Sunex or GP, there both great sockets. All my impact sockets are Sunex, and I've had no issues using them professionally.

Grey Pneumatic is a Taiwan company, Sunex is Chinese. The Grey Pneumatic doesn't have an equivalent all in one set, you have to buy the shallow set and the deep set separately tooltopia.com

id prefer to buy them new, with a student discount, the big truck brands are 600$ for deep&shallow sets MM & SAE. while the sunex are only 335$ still w lifetime warranty

**are 12pt's a daily necessity for working diesels??* if im going to be using them every single day for the next 25 years then i'll be more likely to fork up the extra dough for name brand.

you will eventually need one, every day?,probably not.this is the point where research and patience (which are free) will pay off.i would first write down exactly what i want and put things in priority ,then make a financial plan to accomplish getting it without going into TOO much debt.if you check craigslist, ebay, flea markets, yard sales, auctions, etc. on a regular basis you may get what you are looking for.these are not the only options though. But build a QUALITY basic tool kit,the core as it were, and add to it as need and budget allow.

all depends on what you are working on, the place i see the need for 12pt sockets is on quite a few rod bolts.

i think i'd be asking "why i have to have 12pt sockets vs 6pt, do i have to have both 6 & 12pt?"

Lot of 12pt used in driveline applications or at least Ford, which is what I work on. If I needed them right away, I'd get a cheap set of chromes to get by with, and not be afraid of occasional impact use in a pinch (I know, bad juju, please don't flame me) and seek out an Armstrong 12pt impact set. If you shop around, you can probably find a NOS set or gently used set for the price of sunex. Just my idea, but then again, I use next to 0 12pt.

Quick google search for an Armstrong 12pt impact set found this
http://www.wylaco.com/Armstrong-20-...h-Drive-12pt-Black-Fractional-Deep-Socket-Set
They have the shallow set for about $10 less also. I figure you need metric and I'm on my phone so finding them is a bit of work, but just posting that example to show that quality, American made with a lifetime warranty doesn't have to tool-truck expensive if you know what to look for.

Most truck's (depending on driveshaft oem style) use 12pt bolts on the yoke strap's, 1/2 12pt to be specfic. On Macks there are a few places that have 12pt hardware, differentials have a few I remember off hand.

I really dont know why they'd want 12pt deep sockets though, shallow's yes, but deep socket's I dont see the need for. Most 12pt hardwhare I've seen does not need a deep socket.

My impact sockets are Sunex made for Napa for the most part. No issues. Made in Taiwan and marked accordingly.

The exact reason I bought my deep 12 point std socket set ive ran into them on the same things other members listed also like rod bolts and driveshaft bolts. Sunex makes a really nice ford driveshaft wobble its a 12mm 12pt 1/2inch drive with a small extension thats long enough you can get your impact on it and clear the drive line I love mine those ******* can be tight to I use a adaptor and my 3/8 impact going back together. Sears outlet has some good deals on chrome 12 point industrial sets right now!

I rarely use 12 point sockets, but im a diesel tech on big rigs, semi trucks and what not, also do pickup work time to time on the side. I bought a big set of mac sockets that go to 1 1/4" impact 12 points. Then I just bought craftsman chrome 12 point. Like said, i use a wobble extension and 12 point 12mm or 1/2 on drivelines and other than that, i dont use them. For 3/8 i bought a set of impact shallow off the matco truck and iv used them maybe 4 times. I honestly wouldnt put that much money or effort into getting them right away. Even on big trucks, i use 1/4" drive more than i use 12 point sockets.

I have them and I would say as a starting mechanic they are not a necessity. I am a heavy equipment tech so I don't really work on gas stuff very often but I only bought them because I had a specific application a long time ago and they are NOT a replacement for standard spark plug sockets because they eat all your torque with the double swivel. Idk I have a limited amount of 12pt sockets mainly just 3/8 chrome and larger impact for driveline the most common drive line on class 6-8 and cat off road trucks are 3/4,13/16,20mm, and 1"

i have an older used SO pt100, it does have a little more power than the other 1/2 dozen or so die grinders i have.
all the other ones range in age from 25-30 years old, and werent the best quality models, even when new, a couple of astro branded and a couple of no name $6.00 ones from big lots (of all places) :lol_hitti

I've been a diesel mechanic for 11 years now, the only place you use 12pt sockets are cylinder head bolts, rod bolts and u-joints. It'll be a while before you get to do in-frames or major overhauls. get a 11mm universal socket and a 13mm universal socket and be done with it, plenty of other more important things to buy.

You run into a few 12 point bolts. The ones I can think of right now are heads, drive line and starter bolts.

I bought Craftsman to get me by and have been replacing broken or lost sockets with Snap On. Ive broken zero Craftsman but have lost a half dozen so far. And I use sockets on impacts that shouldn't be. Take that for what you will.

yeah, the lead tech in my shop (62yrs old) uses mac & snap on non-impact sockets on his gun. he said he's been doing it for decades with no problems. (i dont do it, nor will i start) i asked him about the 12pt requirement of my school for this fall, he said just buy some cheaper 1/2" drive 12pt impacts, so thats what i ended up doing.
