Found this compressor for sale near me. Is it worth replacing the motor?

That's a crappy pic, but from what I can tell, it's well worth the $150.

Edit: I can see that it's a Champion, definitely worth $150 if the motor is the only thing that's bad.

I apologize I didn't realize the picture was so bad. It's a 5hp 80 gallon champion single phase compressor. He said it worked fine until the motor stopped working. Any idea how much a replacement motor would be?

Hey Zio, does that Champion pump have the optional 'Low Oil Shutdown' switch?
If so, first check the oil level, if it's good, turn the white knob clockwise a quarter turn and see if she'll run. If not, bypass the switch and try again.

May even be something as simple as the overload on the magnetic starter needs to be reset. Get your multi tester out and be sure you're getting power to the motor side of the coil.

Baldor motors are pretty bulletproof. If the motor was constantly run underpowered (low voltage) it probably burnt out the capacitors, which are easy to change out.

Personally, I'd be burning rubber to give the seller $150!! Go for it.

Good luck,
Tom

It even may just need the thermal overload reset. Some people don't know much about equipment and don't know what to look for.

You need to search for a 5 hp motor in your area to get prices.

Yes. Buy the damn thing already. It looks clean. Make sure the pump spins and makes pressure Cover is off the magnetic starter so you never know what you will find. There should be a reset switch on right side of the pump for the low oil switch

Edit- missed this from 2 weeks ago- wonder if OP bought it b/c someone surely did for that price

5 HP motors don't seem to be too cheap. I would definitely check the caps, thermal overloads if equipped etc of the motor.

take a $150 plus motor cost and compare to what some of those compressors cost in working condition.

PS there are a many things that will drive up the cost of a motor. switches, protection, frame size, voltage capability, IP ratings. Keep it simple when looking.

I did not buy it. The seller told me it was mine. I told him I would be out the next morning. I was hooking up my trailer in the morning when I received a message that he sold it already.

Well, that really *****, it is unfortunate but there isn't much you can do about it.

I've had this happen to me a number of times and it's not cool. If at all possible, I try to have cash on hand and get there ASAP so this doesn't happen, but circumstances often don't allow this.

Don't listen to those wannabees. The compressor is total ****. Send it to me (you can pay the shipping, it's OK with me) and I'll make sure it gets properly disposed of.

Seriously, For $150.00 and whatever it needs to be repaired, it's worth it!

What if the motor is bad because it ran non-stop for weeks in some out of sight shop somewhere.

Any quick and easy way to test the pump?
