I already know the answer

But I figured I would put it out there anyway..

My sister called me today and said they are throwing this old grain scale in the dumpster....

She asked me if I want it

I’m about 200 miles away

F@ck yes couldn’t leave my lips fast enough...

Not sure what the hell I’m going to do with it.... it weighs 1200 pounds

All I know is I want it.

I think it would look great on the backyard concrete patio
LoL

Ok
I would probably get rid of the bottom half and make a pedestal for the scale portion just for a Conversation? Piece...

Any ideas are welcome

In any case I am dragging it home on Sunday

And no

I have not told my wife yet

LoL

even if you just use the pedistal, and make an outdoor clock or thermometer would be cool

thats what I was thinkin...

But with the price of steel today... I'll take the whole deal...

I'm planning on this sunday trip... gotta PM the car trailer and make sure the winch is proper. :rocker:

will update when she is home

Give your wife the credit card, drop her at the mall, pick her up after you get the scale.....she'll never notice LOL

2 things: Don't tell her you "wanted to be ready if she gains any more weight, 'cause the bathroom scale only goes to 300".

Don't waste all that cool internal works by converting it to a clock or thermometer. If any thing try to get it working and maybe modify it so that it multiplies the weight by 4 (150lbs would read 600 on the scale).

Best wishes on getting it home, and keep us informed of any progress.

The romantic hills of central Umbria, Italy,
Man... if you don't , *I* will. Totally bada$$, 1/2 ton capacity and the weights? Yeah!

There was one at the feed store (and it's big brother built into the road in front of it), a one at a local steel mill, third at the local livestock auction house, and later, one at a recycling yard.

Clean it, repaint it, restore it... If nothing else, what a piece of history.

That is gorgeous. I'd keep it as is but keep the deck level with the surrounding area.

Is that the 1st shipping container in the back ground?

I think you should use it as is.
install it in the entry of your house so guests coming in have to walk over it.
when they ask what that is for you can say one of several things

we weigh you coming in and leaving. we base our meal prices on your weight difference

its for security, just in case you are thinking of walking away with any of our gold bars...we are checking on you...

oh its nothing. just makes me feel better to see other peoples weights

Looks great!
Put in in the back yard and make a patio with this being in the center of one side and surrounded well from the sides. Would look awesome! This would be one unique piece.

Does anyone know offhand
What the measurement is between the wheel wells on a ford F3 50?
1995
8’ bed
This thing is 48 1/2 inches wide and 71 inches long

They will load it with a forklift for me

I’m away from the house right now so I can’t measure myself

But taking the pick up truck will be a lot easier than bringing the car trailer

JOHN: i agree that it's COOL, but do you have a fork lift at home? I'm guessing not so go grab a 5x9 Uhaul with a ramp that should be about $25 for the day. then grab some pipe to have the forklift set the scale on so you can strap it from each end of the trailer to keep it from moving on the drive home. then maybe with a couple friends and more pipe roll it into your garage or even your back yard if possible and hopefully nobody will get hurt.

1200 pounds doesn't just MOVE as you probably already know.

another way i might try to move it is to take it apart, but i'm not sure how these are wired.

I'd bet it won't fit between your wheel wells on your truck, but it might. the big question is how would you get it off once you got home or do you have a gantry or bridge crane?

good luck

Full sheets of plywood fit between the wheel wells on my 89 F250 with drop in liner...same bed as yours. Might be tight but you should be good.

My back concrete patio is elevated above the grade

Depending on where I park
I can back up to it and the pick up tailgate is right at the concrete level

At that point I can use a chain and my kubota
To slide it off

If you separate the base from the tower, it will no longer work, the levers and springs are in the base...we used these for years at a plant I worked in and are still using them today, according to the scale certifier that checks the scales every year these are the most desirable scales as they don't break.

I’d like to find an illustration of the inner workings

I will look for a serial number or some other sort of identification when I finally get it

I have a feeling that the mechanism is probably pretty simple

And yes
I realize if I Separated it

It won’t work...

John: that thing is AWESOME. looks like you had about 4 to 6 inches to spare between your wheel wells. is it on a pallet or does it have wheels and the plan is to just wheel it off your truck onto your patio?

now i have to say i wish you all the best in taking that off your truck without damaging your tailgate or you.

here's to getting it in your backyard without too much trouble.

CONGRATS!!

Thanks

But to the disappointment of some

I decided to go with my original thought and only retain the lollipop operate portion of the scale.

It was pretty easy to disassemble

And actually I’m pretty sure that this unit will work with a variety of other Toledo scale bases

The platform base that was originally on the scale was way too large and heavy to keep for me personally.

I also had the thought of completely refinishing the entire unit sanding painting etc.

But after seeing it in my garage

I love the old patina and classic look

I am not going to change a thing.

I might make a small base for it
With some locking casters

That’s about it.
