Should I pull the trigger on this 452TVX CompAir Kellogg compressor "PIC HEAVY"

Hello new guy here in need of some help. I will be purchasing some older tools from a guy I meet not to long ago and one of them is this 452tvx CompAir Kellog Compressor. He got it awhile back from a aerospace shop that was updating there shop. He said it ran when he got it but never used it due to it being a 3 phase setup. Its been sitting for a few yrs outside on a trailer and I was told I could have it for $350 the way it sits. I am currently in Phx AZ and will be moving my family back to FL in 6 weeks and want to know if its worth me picking up? I will have a small shop in FL with me and a few friends working in it from time to time and will also be running a sand blaster cabinet I also plan to pick up from this same guy. I do a lot of metal work welding and grinding with air tools and may wish to paint a car or two in the future. I am told I will need a phase converter and if so what do I need exactly? I found a 10Hp 3 phase 17,000rpm rotary converter for $200 on Ebay but it says I need a idler motor? Not sure what all this is and if It will work for this setup? If I did end up getting the compressor I do plan to rebuild the actual pump and do a nice restoration on this compressor. Just wondering if its really worth my time and money and labor to get this one going? I am in need of a bigger compressor then what I have now.

On to the pics.

The cabinet I plan on getting from him. From what I was told this came from the same Aerospace shop.

Judging by the pictures, that compressor was ran long and hard. For $350 it's not a terrible deal, but keep the following in mind.
1) At 10hp 3ph, you would need a 15HP phase converter to run it.
2) A single phase 7.5hp motor "might" run it in case you wanted to swap it out.
3) You don't know if they reguarly drained the tank. A hydrotest would be needed.
4) You don't know how the pump looks inside. It could cost you several hundered to go through just the pump.
5) For a blast cabinet/ air tools, there are a ton of sub $1k compressors out there that would easily meet your needs and the kellogs going to need atleast that to get it running in a home shop.

Mind you, I pulled my Champion out of a junk yard and it's 100% overkill for what I do- but it works amazing. Well, after I spend $500 on it going through it.

Above are some specs on the compressor. Phase converters and compressors do not play well together so research this real well before assuming that 10hp RPC will run this. I would also suggest that you check out the cost to rebuild this pump head + the cost to ship it to FL + the cost to repower it to single phase. Then there is the power to run this beast, 7500 watts to run it. Me I would pass.

If you need an idler motor for the phase converter you might as well just purchase a 1 phase 10HP motor or even a 7.5HP motor with a 3/4 diameter pulley.

I would get the blast cabinet and pass on the compressor even though I think the Kellogg's are good machines. This one was rode hard and put away wet.

Ok this is the info I was after. I think I will pass on the compressor and pick up the cabinet. Its only $150 and he has a nice hydraulic tube bender sitting in the corner I am also after so this will give me some more cash towards that. I was mainly wanting to get the compressor so I could have something that would power the blaster when I needed it. Another plus is I don't have to try and get this in the back of a moving truck now.

Thanks again for the info I greatly appreciate it.

Will seller let you "part out" the compressor and let you buy just the controls and compressor itself ??

Thus, you only transport a light load across the country. That 10 HP 3 phase motor does you no good, and tank could be bad/need testing. Getting the compressor and controls would be a win for you.

See if he'll bite and get compressor for $100 to $150 that you could take your time rebuilding.

That's not a bad idea either. I would really enjoy doing a full rebuild on the pump. What do you mean controls? And I'll see what he says gonna try going over some time this week to get the other tools.

Yeah my idea is just keep the compressor from going to scrapper. By "controls" I was using that generically to mean everything except the tank and 3 PH motor. The tank can go to scrapper and same with 3 PH motor unless he can find a buyer which is unlikely.

Snag the pulley/belts from the electric motor also. Good luck.
