Hello all. I moved my washer today and removed this lid and inside is a bunch of dirt?

This hole is next to the water shutoff of the house.

What is it?

Do I need to clean this dirt out or leave it as is?

Thanks all for help!

I wouldn't worry about it.
If you ever need to install a sump pump then you might need to clean it out, but I'm assuming you don't have in water issues in your basement since there's currently no pump in it.

Sometime washers used to drain into the sump pit, which may have been the case for yours before a renovation was done to drain directly into the sewer.

To hell with that! Dig it out and see what is in there. If nothing, looks like a cool place to hide stuff when you go out of town. Stick valuables in there, great hiding place.

looks like a pit for a sump pump. Hard to tell from the photo but it appears someone filled it in with concrete. If you don't have water issues in the basement, then let leave it be.

I have to say I wouldn't think to move a washing machine to look for valuables. Might be a good spot for a floor safe.

Not to be silly, but when I saw the title of the thread, I thought I would see something like this:

Looks like he was bored.

Um, back to the thread. If you didn't know it was there all this time, it sounds like there is nothing to worry about.

The original well for my house used to be in the basement and at some point they drilled a new one outside. What is left of the old one is a pipe about six or eight inches in diameter that sticks up out of the floor. It is empty down about maybe 8 feet and looks like sand at the bottom. When I had my pump replaced a while back my well guy saw it and recommended that I fill up the pipe so rodents don't get down there and die because they can't get back out. At worst that could cause a problem with my well water or even if that didn't happen it could get pretty smelly down in the basement.

No idea what the hole was for in the OP but that might be the reason it is filled in.

Would that be the guy who had a auger bit attached to a Hole Hawg® enter his eye socket & lived? I think it happened in the Tahoe/ Reno area.

To the OP as others have said, if you have not had any issues before I would not worry about it.
