I have an automatic timed tank drain unit. I can see it needs to be plumbed to the hole at the bottom of the tank on one side and the other side goes into a bucket or out through the wall to the outside or something. But how exactly did you mount the unit and run the wiring and plumbing?

Please post pix.

I ran conduit to the location and put an outlet to plug it in. Hard piped from the bottom of the compressor to an inline strainer then soft line to auto drain. After that, soft line to a stainless pipe through the wall. To mount the drain a made a simple bracket from 2" angle for it to sit in.

It's not timed, it just vents after the pump cycles off

That looks like the Tsunami Moisture Minder

I think this is the one I will be installing one day.

Tsunami Moisture Minder. I like that it is mechanical, no extra electrical wiring, and works every time the compressor cycles.

Made this little bracket so it could be floor mounted, closer to the bottom of the tank.

Tee’d in and copper line ran down to the bottom.

I have a Speedaire electric drain. There's a threaded elbow coming off the bottom of the tank, and some threaded fittings and copper pipe soldered together, and the drain is on the end of it. I installed a union so I can easily remove it. It discharges into a 5 gallon bucket, since I have no drain nearby. The water evaporates before it has a chance to accumulate, so I never empty it. The wiring goes up the tank with adhesive clamps and goes into a junction box. I turn the compressor on/off with a remote toggle switch in the garage (the compressor is in the basement on the other side of the house). The toggle switch controls the coil of the contactor. I have the drain wired so that it turns on whenever the toggle switch is on. It'll turn on about every 20 minutes or so and run for about 5 seconds.

Do any of these solutions work on compressors in freezing areas? Mine is outside under the shed roof. It gets down to 0F sometimes.

I just have the one that came with my Eaton compressor:

Nothing complicated about it, but I do plug it into a wifi wall outlet in the barn that's programmed to turn on for a minute early every morning, and the drain is set to open for 2 seconds. As a result, my tank gets drained every day. If I want to manually drain it, I just use the Smart Life app on my phone to turn that outlet on for a moment.

I live at 6300ft, so I just let the drain open to a piece of stall mat on the floor. There's never a lot of condensate, and it dries quickly.

Not what you asked for, BUT here's what I did:

1698891239685.png

This is a ball valve (90* closed to open). It's not shown here but I made a handle that goes up to about 3' above the floor. Occasionally I turn the valve a few degrees 'til I quit hearing the spitting sound. It discharges into a bucket. The bucket never needs to be emptied as the condensate evaporates completely between purges. This isn't automatic, but it was CHEAP. Someday I might replace this with something automatic, but probably not.

I'm not suggesting you all use this idea; just showing an alternative.

I'm envious of y'all's automatic drains though.

b-t-w; this is just a couple of feet from the shop fridge, so I walk past it every time I'm in the shop.

I re-wired my own motor starter, included a timer for a normal-closed solenoid valve in the bottom of the tank that purges for 1 sec each time the motor stops. No wasting air when I'm not using the compressor or in the garage.

Motor starter also controls fans on the intercooler, as well as the normal-open solenoid valve on the intercooler drain....and has an interlock to the lighting in the garage (no lights, no compressor run).

Compressor drain is auto (essentially air piloted). No voltage or phases needed. Works on 200 or even 221!

"The Expello Air Products Shop Valve automatically removes moisture from shop air compressors. The valve replaces the manual drain petcock on the compressor’s storage tank. This valve is actuated by running a line from the valve to the compressor’s governor. Each time the compressor reaches cut in and cut out the valve will purge the moisture from the tank."

My go to for heavy use compressor. Scroll to bottom. https://expelloairproducts.com/

No pictures of any of their products installed!

The Expello valve looks pretty clever and includes an option for 12VDC heating! However they are about 3.5" tall and would not thread directly into the bottom of a typical tank unless the tank were raised or the drain were piped away then using elbows raised to allow connection of the valve.

It is pilot air driven like the Tsunami valve so your compressor would need to have an unloader.

I am still leaning towards the Tsunami valve.
