I've currently got my bench grinder on pedestal/stand. I'm going to mount it to my new work bench. Curious if you have your mounted directly to the bench, or do you create some kind of box to raise it up 4/5 inches so you can work with it w/o having to have it right on the edge of the bench.

Thanks,

Brian

PS - I think I read on here where someone suggested leaving it on the pedestal stand and putting that on casters so you can move it around to get it away from certain areas when making a mess.

I have 2 grinders on a seperate stand away from the work bench. It's not bolted to the floor yet, (cause I don't have much of a floor...LOL).

The main grinder, (craftsman 8"), is bolted directly to the stand.
The other one is a cheapy 8" I use for wire wheeling and polishing, etc, with my home brewed mount. It's an old vise swivel base with 2" reciever built onto it. I can extend the grinder out away from the stand or pivot it off to the side if need be. Can also use it in a truck reciever if I want to...LOL

Here's some old pics that show the mount, and a little of the stand...

I would prefer a pedestal if I had the space. Right now my bench grinder is on the top of a shelf, I c-clamp it to my workbench when I need.

I know someone on here mounted their vice or grinder to a piece of vertical square tube and had a little bit bigger piece of square tubing sleeve mounted on their table edge. they then slipped the vice or grinder into the tube.
Confusing?

You could make a tripod with a vertical piece of square tubing and slip the vice / grinder on when needed. Then maybe when youre done using it you can store the tripod under a workbench or something.

Well... then I'll just leave it as is and put it on the back wall of the garage w/ my other stuff... trying to have a very open/functional space devoid of clutter.

Someone had a small square "table" that had their bench grinder mounted on one side and their drill press mounted on the other. Using one spin it around.. and vice versa. I can't remember who it was and I can't find a pic but I thought it was a good use of space.

I keep my on a shelf and just c-clamp it to a bench when I need it. It's a pretty low tech solution and it's a bit inconvenient but it's cheap and doesn't tie up bench or floor space when I'm not using it.

I did the same thing when I worked at a JD dealer, I made a plate welded to a piece of pipe which slipped over the door bollard that was held in place by three 1/2" bolts which clamped it to the bollard. One for my vise and one for my bench grinder.

Mine is currently on a work stand.

I plan in the near future to build a rolling cabinet that will have the grinder on one side and my disc/belt sander on the other. Couple drawers to hold all the attachments, extra wheels, belts and discs.

I have a total of 4 different types of bench grinders plus a 1" belt sander for various uses.
I've wanted to make this for some time.

It's not finished yet. I still need to make a plate for my belt sander, add the lock bolt to each mounting tube / plate and mount each grinder on the plates then paint it. each grinder will have a bag type cover to protect it when not in use.

I used a boughten three legged stand for the past 15+ years that was way too short for me until this past year when I got some time to fabricate one to better suit my height and of better quality than previous one.

Started with some P&O steel and a cardboard design.
2a9pjjr.jpg

Welded up the base.
2ntl7h5.jpg

Mounted three stationary and one adjustable foot under the base and metal finished it.
210czup.jpg

Bent up and TIG welded a small tray.
ot0rja.jpg

Tray completed and bolted onto column.
i43gav.jpg

Completed pedestal for my Baldor bench grinder. Painted machinery gray to match other equipment in shop.
okc4k8.jpg

I should have done that years ago rather than feeling like kneeling down to dress a lathe tool or sharpen a drill bit.

I like the tray idea. I'm going to copy that one for sure.

I have a big Baldor I don't use in my storage building, I have a little one for sharpening a drill bit and wire wheel but really rarely use it as I have it all in hand held, mostly air powered.

Cary, I'm surprised you don't have one mounted on the shopping cart you use for a mig welder cart. ;)

That's very ingeniuous !!

Only improvement that would be cool - - - make the wheels able to tilt up out of way and let full weight of stand down on ground to make it more stable when working. Then when ready to move, press down on tilt mechanism for wheels where they lock in "down" position.

I'm squirreling away your cool design to replicate once I get my own welder.

Thanks for sharing.

Road: very impressive design and build. i really like that you built it stout and also that your plates are wider than the grinders so you can grab them fairly easy.

I started a thread to see what others do for multiple grinders because i would like to have 5 to 7 grinders at the ready with 10-14 different wheels for different work. your design might do nicely once you change wheels on yours to have the variety.

here's my link to the thread i started and i'd love to have your post of the build and finish projects and take up as many posts as you wish so i (we) can look it up later.

I might weld some wheels on this old commercial wheel on the side so i can tip it to move it around on it's wheels. then when i set it down it would be solid and thanks to you i have a better way to use it with multiple grinders.

thanks

EDIT: found a member's picture of wheels added to an old commercial wheel that i'm thinking of doing unless someone has a better idea.

Here is my setup. Baldor grinder and a 1725 rpm motor used for either buffer or wire wheel. Mounted on a recycled drill press column with a simple light bar that provides plenty of light on the work. The stand is very sturdy and has adjustable bolts in the bottom to compensate for slightly uneven floors. It can be easily walked around as needed. The adjustable table allows work to be positioned at the right height. The mounting plate is 1/2" aluminum slightly offset so the stand is balanced.

CNGsaves:

Thanks , I did think about the wheel option you mentioned. I like these wheels because 1) my shop floor is not level. 2) it gets the top grinder to a better suited working height for me. 3) I felt that a tilt type wheel would make the stand unstable due to all the weight she's heavy.
I'm thinking of calling her my Ex. lmao !
Plus the wheels were free.

drivesitfar:
Thanks, I have grinding wheels for different applications, a set on the red grinder for every day stuff standard fine & course at 1.5 amps, a set for the green grinder at 8 amps for my lathe tooling ( green stone & white stone ) The gray grinder at 6 amps has a set of polishing wheels and a medium scotchbrite wheel, One of the new grinders I will get will be for rust removal with wire wheels. Installing all the wheels will be the last thing I do.
I will check out the link.

Tonight, My buddy just finished welding the tool tray then I cleaned up the welds and put the first coat of paint on it.
Tomorrow I will mount the tray then apply the finish coat.

Next improvement idea is to add a 15' power cord to the base & maybe a flex light.

Sims: in case you are asking if my brake drum moves around much when using my buffer (not grinder) i'd say not much. of course if i push hard enough it will, but my stand probably weighs 125 pounds or in that range. if i did have a grinder mounted to it that was 1 HP or less i'm guessing it wouldn't move because i wouldn't be pushing on it as much as a buffing wheel.

Road: thanks for posting your cool grinder stand over on the vise and grinder thread i posted a think to in my earlier post.

drivesitfar. Exactly that's what I was asking. Sorry I didn't make my thoughts clear. :) I like the idea and look of using the old brake drum and mounting a bench grinder on it.

Sims: I've seen several member's stands similar to mine that have put a bottom on their old brake drum and filled it with cement, gravel or something heavy to keep it from moving. also others have filled their post with shot, sand and cement to add more weight.

I'm guessing Road's stand idea without wheels wouldn't move at all with the weight of all the grinders. Hopefully the wheels on his will keep it from moving too.

PS: i just clicked on your garage build and it's amazing. i could only dream to have that much space, but i'd clutter it up with commercial racks, tools and machines and almost surprised you haven't. you could put Basketball hoops on each end and probably have the local school's practices in yours.

Well. I must be the only one who doesn't have their grinder mounted down.

I have a Ryobi 8" which has ruber feet on the bottom. It just sits on my bench pushed to the back most of the time. Then, if I need some more swing or access I move it forward to the edge or to the corner depending on my needs.

It was my intent to hard mount it but after I had the need to use it before I had decided where to mount it and it ran so smooth I really didn't see the need and find it much more versitle.
