I'm thinking of building a flatbed trailer eventually. It needs to be pretty heavy duty. Of course, I plan to buy the axles and so forth.

I'm working out an idea in my head and I would like to see what kind of trailers you have built.

So, post those pics!!

Thanks.

I sketched out the one above and made some adjustments during the build process. As for the cost, I have about $1,600 for materials into it and did all of the labour myself. I could have bought one for that amount but it would not be nearly as strong.

It's the opposite here in Ontario. Registering a home built trailer is too easy in my opinion. The only information I was required to supply was the colour and weight - of the trailer not its carry capacity. I did not have to provide any drawings or pictures, prove that it was properly welded or asked any safety related questions about the lighting, axles, tires, coupler, etc.

Mine is in the foreground of this picture:

PICT0133Medium.jpg

It has 2 5000 lb axles, and the main frame is 2 x 4 rectangular tubing. I finally got it wired this summer, and upgraded to LED lights for everything.

Homemade trailer registration is really easy here in Ohio. Just the weight (of the trailer) is needed. You do have to have a weigh slip from a certified scale, but that's it.

I'm sure I could have bought one cheaper, but what's the fun in that.

Mine isn't really all that heavy duty, but it was cheap and easy to build. It's an old pop up camper frame.

$100 for the pop up frame
$100 in PT wood
$40 for wheels and tires
$25 for jack
$25 for lights
$60 for chains, screws, weld on pockets, eye bolts, corner brackets, etc.

So I have about $350 into it.

Thanks for the pics!! I'm looking for ideas. I'd like to build from scratch but may buy one and turn it into what I want.

My dad used to build them at his shop class. They are defiantly more money if you buy all new. I have modified some. Our local scrap yard gets them in sometimes and will sell them for scrap prices, but you have to asked them. "Big tex" has some good plans online. they show axle placement witch is huge. Good luck.

I don't live in NJ (was born there but thankfully moved away from there many years ago).

It's easy to register a home built trailer where I live.

Here's mine.
Main frame is 4'' x 4'' x .375'' walled tubing.Total weight is 2300 lbs.
18ft 1 inch by 72'' cargo space and a 2 door storage area in the front.
I yet have to make some car ramps for it....
I have over 5 grand in materials n bits for it.......I'll never recoup the investment. Oh well....

Great work!

But I got a complaint..... Wife walked by and seen the pictures, and "said oh boy we need one of them! You can build something like that right?"

I had her convinced that camping was meant to be in a tent and not an rv, she stated that its still tent camping this way!

Looks like another project added to the list:headscrat

LOL... I hear ya. That was the only thing that kept me sane during my 9 month unemployment status a couple years ago...

Thanks!

A little project that my dad and I worked on when I was a teenager. It's stuff like this that got me into design, metal shaping, body work, and paint..

I recall he did one side then had me duplicate it on the other... only in reverse out of 16GA sheet metal. After using it for a while, a guy who actually owned a Ford Ranger approached us to buy it...it was tough to let go. Trailer also tilts/dumps while the hitch is still hooked up ...manually though.

These aren't flatbeds but they are trailers that I have built either for myself or for others.

My dad and I built this dump trailer awhile back. It has sides, but they could be left off for a flat bed. I still don't have a 12 volt power unit to dump it though. I'm using my tractor hydraulics right now. We started with a Chevrolet 1 ton frame and built it up from there.

Good luck with your build. You can almost always buy something cheaper than you can build it, but anybody with good credit can buy something already built. It takes skill and patience to build it from scratch.

Bought this tandem axle trailer for cheap. Was a wood deck dovetail lowboy built by trailer mfr in the late 90's. I bought it with no wood floor.

I added a bunch of 2x2" angle iron cross supports one day, then parked it back outside for a few months til I was able to pull it back into the shop. I finished up some of the cross supports that I didn't have a chance to finish, then laid down some 1/8" diamond plate steel for an open center car hauler.

I had the whole thing sand blasted for $100, then I painted it with gloss black enamel. I added new wiring, new lights, new reflectors. Custom receiver/winch mount at front, built some 6' long ramps and ramp pockets underneath. I also put in new bearings, added brakes to one axle, new suspension bushings, and new trailer tires. I sold it a few days after finishing it up because the truck I was driving everyday couldn't pull it ('56 Ford F100).

These pics are from after I welded most of the cross supports in, and after I laid the floors in. I never got around to taking any pics of it all painted up.

Now I need a damn trailer so I have to go buy one. Should have never sold this one!
