I've been trying to break into knife making and i've been looking grinders available for purchase as well as homemade units. I started out using my oscillating belt sander which was good for the first two knives but wanted a "strip" style sander so I began building one. As it turns out I am already feeling unsatisfied with the way this strip sander will work and I am looking for input on legitimate grinders.

So feel free to post a picture of yours with as much information as you'd like. I'm really interested in hearing about motor details such as phase, hp, rpm, frequency, speed control in addition to belt size, wheel size, and tracking components.

Realistically what I am looking to do is either build my own or to find a beginner model for purchase that is within budget. On Jimmy Direst's youtube channel I saw a fellow with a Baldor motor with a wheel attached directly to it and somehow the sandpaper was fashioned to fit snugly around the wheel alone. Now I don't know how well this would work since I did not see it in action, but as someone looking to save money, time and space I feel like this could be a useful design. I made this using a harbor freight bench grinder. Needs more speed to be really good, but for my needs works fine. 0eacbe1166205b4093ef1724e6363860.jpg

I'm using a Camry timing belt idler on to, and I machines the drive roller. It uses 1" belts (cheap at harbor freight).
