Some people may say I have an addiction to carlyle. Been using them for years and yet to break one661046bcdc828d4a4c16b1d2bda036b9.jpg97fb6d552af32494b58f3a5bfdf2e4bf.jpge3506dac102308c52a5338f2c95950bd.jpg4566961f8eb2efe659926a7febdc7e3a.jpg91aaf7c4046a01a4263319cd6171f069.jpgaf99000375663df50d6b07e90506f03e.jpg5a4912b3fe2fff80af687900281369c0.jpg99992b282f22e53f0f7c14d897d281ff.jpg8f124bbede3042d6949e30fb17784d7d.jpgdfe5e70bc1f32ae176a5cef33c38ef1c.jpgd6c513530806776db1a658a16643d319.jpg162122689bba53aa9b679b93f2f97731.jpgf0ac932b3bd76d4f43a35e9f652f5fd6.jpg4a8bb0c1b52ad31767cfbadfad421c12.jpgddb4241532b24b2c2fc8935a999aafa5.jpgf091406269bc8db40f0c70355f7f37bb.jpg

Picked these up. Look and feel are great.

I have a set of the standard length torx and they have been great! Oddly enough I have a set of tamper proof Gearwrench sitting next to them in the box. The Gearwrench have a some light rust on the bits, the Carlyle are about a month older and they are still clean. Plan on getting a set of SAE allen at some point in Carlyle.

I finally broke down and picked up the three amigos of the ratchet world and damn happy I did. So far only the 1/4 and 3/8 have gotten a work out but man oh man are these nice pieces, I'm very impressed.

Haven’t had an opportunity to use them yet but they look and feel superb. They’re not even in the same class as what they are replacing (Craftsman clear handles).

I really really really wish Carlyle had more tools in GREEN!

They look great! I'd like to buy a set in green and in Orange and then combine them so Phillips and slotted are different colors.

I like how they have the Hex bolsters so you can get extra torque if needed. I have a few odd drivers that have them. I have not used the bolster feature much but when I need it it is a life saver.
I was just at Harbor Fright today and they have a set that puts the bolster on the top of the handle rather than the bottom. The only benefit I see in doing that is that you can put a socket on it and press down hard to keep the bit from caming out.
Otherwise I would not like it as often I use my palm on the top to press down when working on a tight screw. I would always try that before reaching for another tool to get leverage as it just takes time to go get that tool.
Let us know how they perform once you give them a real work out.

I got the ultrapro version of the roto ratchets, they are awesome, can hit some crazy angles and still ratchet, like when doing oil changes

I like how you can use the roto ratchets like a nut driver when starting a long bolt or nut on a long thread. Much more versatile. I was at NAPA looking at it and this Carlyle roto ratchet has a nice feel. I think it has 100 teeth on the ratchet. Someone will correct me if I am wrong.

Those spanners with "Carlyle" stamped on them share the same font as Maximum, Husky and Gearwrench. I would suspect that they are from the same Taiwanese factory as Gearwrench and thus are simply Gearwrench tools. Which are just fine.

You would be incorrect. The Carlyle wrenches are made by Kabo whereas, the current Gearwrench non ratcheting combination wrenches are made in the SATA factory (not be confused with paint guns) in the PRC.

There's a large difference in quality between KABO made tools and Gearwrench Branded stuff. I will agree the current Husky tools are made in the same place as Gearwrench though.

Pretty sure they're not made by Kabo. Infar seems to be the ones making most of the wrenches.

Personally, I don’t think that is the case. I have Gearwrench brand wrenches as well and they are not nearly the quality the Carlyle are. If I remember correctly, my Gearwrench wrenches had “Made in China” on the package.

I could be mistaken, but this is my observation. I know I plan on replacing the Gearwrenches with the Carlyle.

Carlyle tools are not sold in Canada so its hard to make a direct comparison. Canadian Tire's Mastercraft and Maximum tools are sourced mainly from China. To me the the latest Maximum wrenches look the same as Gearwrench

Napa's Canadian house brand Ultrapro is sourced mainly from Taiwan

Perhaps but, I know the Carlyle ratcheting wrenches have the little sealed brass screw on the ratcheting based end just like other Kabo made ratcheting wrenches :dunno:

I haven't seen anything branded Carlyle that resembles anything made by Gearwrench.

To muddy the waters further, the newest ratcheting wrenches branded Sunex have the same nonslip open end as the long pattern Carlyle.

Until Taiwan tool companies start selling in the USA under their own names, who knows who makes what. Until then, we're in the land of rebranded or rebadged tools :wtf:

Ah, thought you and he were talking about the basic combos.

Infar recently showed off a 144 tooth (72 x 2pawl?) with that signature open end so those may show up at some point. Perhaps that's what the Sunex are.

Flyer here

On an aside Infar does claim to have a plant dedicated to manufacturing for GW so the other poster noting similarities in font could have some tangible connection.

Yes, that was me.

Enlarge the pictures, they are the same. Bought a few of the Carlyle then stumbled into the doitbest/channelock version at a hardware store - own a few of both and, yes, they are the same. They even sell the ratcheting end version as well. Milwaukee's new wrenches also look very similar.

That Infar 144 tooth ratcheting wrench looks damn nice. Thanks for sharing. Perhaps Infar makes all the 120xp stuff :dunno:

Unfortunately, I don't have a do it best type hardware store in my area that has the channellock tools on display. I am curious why Channellock doesn't show them on their website. It might be that they aren't US made but, they have some other imported tools listed. :dunno:

I have that short Carlyle 1/4 ratchet that's mostly handle. It quickly became my favorite 1/4 ratchet and has served me well for a couple of years or so.

My understanding is that Channellock has licensed out the name for production, and doesn't have any direct involvement in the manufacture or marketing of the tools, which is why they don't offer them for sale on their website.

Just for kicks, I emailed both Channellock and Do It Best on who manufactures those wrenches.

Channellock has yet to respond. Do It Best responding with "This is an exclusive item available through Do It Best." When pushed further, I was told "The only information I have is it is a Channellock brand."

Thanks. It was your comments as well as other GJers that helped with the tool selections.
