The odd item at our Napa will be branded as Carlyle, like the battery boosters etc, but none of their hand tools here are. Their upper level line here is called Ultra-Pro.

Pretty sure Ultra-Pro IS Carlyle...but I could be wrong.

Just doing a visual comparison of my Ulta-Pro soft handle ratchets, they don't look *quite* the same but my 3/8 flex head looks very similar.
If this is the case, fantastic. I really like my flex head.

I put a small amount of Superlube in my P90s. Didn't gunk it in there. Makes the ratchet a little quieter, but I don't think there was any difference in performance.

Thanks! I probably won’t get the time for a bit, but I may open up one and give it a try. Worst comes to worst I’ll just blast the thing with brake cleaner if it makes things worse and drop some oil in there instead. Gotta look up how to open these guys first. I grabbed the XL 1/2” today and figured I’d just leave it in my trunk in case I get a flat. I don’t like leaving power tools in the car due to the temp fluctuations and humidity. I feel like it could use a little lubrication more so than the other ratchets I’ve received (in all drives). It feels great, don’t get me wrong, you just can tell there’s some beefy spring(s?) in there. The ratchet is heavy in a way that lets you know it’s sturdy, but the weight is well balanced so it doesn’t feel as heavy as it is unless you hold it like a sword lol.

I also grabbed the socket bit adapter cause my OTC one rusted immediately and I feel like it has the plague and want it gone lol. Picked up their flex shaft 1/4” drive handle, a Napa putty knife that was on sale for like $3, and finally grabbed the reg size 3/8” locking flex. I’ll take pics when I get the chance.

At this point I got a $5 coupon for Napa left on a $10+ purchase. I’ll probably just wait for some new crazy deal and get that if it looks good. If not I’ll just spend it on wiper fluid and oil or something there. Idk. Still needed to upgrade out of my craftsman evolv Allen sockets (my wrenches are sweet), so if anyone tried their hex sockets I’d love to hear how they’ve been.

I have a question for the Carlyle crowd... NAPA is a distribution and retail company; and not a manufacturer. The ratchets are said to be made in Taiwan, under a contract agreement with an established tool manufacturer. Are these ratchets made by KABO, or INFAR?

Sorry I don’t know. I want to say I read somewhere it was Kabo but I’m really talking out my ***.

Here are some last pics for a while. Not that much other Carlyle stuff I had my eyes on based on stuff I already own. If anything looks a little oily it’s because it is. Been wiping everything down in Ballistol before putting it away.

Here’s the 48 teeth, 25” ratchet. Haven’t gotten a chance to use it yet. It’s gonna stay in the trunk for pulling wheel lugs until it’s needed for a more noble job.

ca28c2fda620bd97f2b86567145e2e62.jpg

Here’s the bit adapter. It uses a spring clip instead of a magnet to hold the bit. I like it more since every magnetic thing I own inevitably just attracts dirt and grime and in a bit adapter blind hole it can be a PIA to get out.

1/4” drive flex speed handle. Got it for hose clamps or who else knows what. I’m bending it about as much as seems warranted for it’s springiness as a reference. I could bend it a little more but it starts hazy if you’re in that spot region of permanent deformation. Spring is very stiff and can definitely handle some torque.

Lastly, the locking flex regular sized 3/8” ratchet. Last one I had my eye on. Now all my beat out craftsman ratchets can retire to the garage at my parents’ house.

Bonus, $3 putty knife with hammer end. Not Carlyle, really just Napa but was on monthly sales flier.

In most cases the UltraPro Platinum are just Carlyle in different colours.

I know INFAR makes some Carlyle stuff, not sure if they make the ratchets or not.

I'm saying they are one in the same with different handles & part #'s.
I contacted another YouTuber in Canada and asked him to pick me up a ratchet in the UltraPro brand that they no longer offer in the US under the Carlyle brand. After comparing them side by side I'm sure they are sourced from the same OEM. I have no idea why they brand them different between the USA & Canada.

Glad to hear it! Thanks for the confirmation.
With the declining quality in my old go-to brand (Canadian Tire Maximum) I'm on the hunt for quality tools at an affordable price for the weekend warrior like me.

I tested out the 25” 1/2” drive ratchet on my lug nuts (76 ft-lb). It takes zero effort to knock them loose. And the back drag is low enough to spin them out most of the way to the point you can easily spin it out by hand. The only con I can think of is it’s so big I’ll need to choke up on it apply about 76 ft-lb when torquing a lug nut back on it or I’ll have no feel. I’m thinking for the situation when I am changing a flat. I don’t keep my torque wrench in the car. Idk why, but I feel like the temperature cycling and humidity will make it lose its calibration faster. Obviously I can retorque any lugs once I get home properly

Picked up the green screwdriver set for my 9yo son to match his toolbox!20190117_201246.jpg

I think this is one of the best material gifts a parent can give. When I (hopefully) have a son, I’ll be doing the same thing. I know kids like toys and stuff, but tools will give them the freedom and ability to learn new trades and be independent. And they will last a lifetime whereas toys last what, a year or two?

My hats off to you sir!

Thanks, I have 3 boys, from 12 to 4 and all have varying levels of tool sets, I too believe it's a great gift to give that will hopefully last their lifetimes.

Carlyle fit the bill in this case as he is a green fanatic and for the price they seem to be excellent quality!

I've been getting away with wrenches on everything down to about a 12, absolutly right that 10, 8, 7, 6 are a *******. I wouldn't even try those with a 6 point ratchet wrench so I suppose it doesnt matter to me personally.

Here's my new Carlyle tools.....absolutely disappointing. I've been using one Carlyle Ratchet and its been a great tool, comfort grip 3/8th. This one

https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/CHQR3890

Here's what showed up today.

Disregarding that they sent me a very used ratchet, the chrome on the other two ratchets as well as the chrome on the metric ratchet wrenches is equally as...meh. Ratchet mechanism feels ok, dont think they've been used at least, needs some ATF I suppose... Very very underwhelmed and I was really excited to get these.

Comparison to a rather used GW long pattern 15, all I had left at home. Notice all the little nicks, and its brand new. Not a tool polisher at all....but I am a little disappointed, think i'll put the wrenches in service, maybe... they fit in the tray like ****. :(

Best pic I could snag. Doesn't look to bad here :D

Don’t feel to bad, I was all excited today when i heard the ups guy ring my door bell, that is until i opened my box from Napa and took a look at this ****. So disappointed my set looks exactly like yours. They look used and Incase anyone is wondering the picture of the paper towel is there to show what i found when i whipped them off. Tell me how a supposedly new tool has ******* scratches and dirt all over them??? This is my first Carlyle purchase needless to say I’m not impressed. For the price i got these at i dunno if I’m supposed to just be happy with what i got, personally i think it’s a damn shame that they sent these out. Oh and the 17mm picture was to remind me that, that specific one is fucked up and has almost a dead spot in the gearing when turning it, at some point in both directions it almost freezes up and becomes a real ***** to turn. I was really thinking that this would be the start of many future purchases but now i think I’m going to change my mind. **** my 1/2 gearwrench socket set looked better than this ****.

Stores must be shipping back returned sets without checking them. You see it on a daily basis with parts but im surprised they're allowing it with Carlyle. I'd call a CSR and see what's up. They definitely shouldn't be selling those things as "New". If it were me i'd try to get them to knock money off and get the single wrench swapped out at a store.

Hey man, those do look exactly like mine! Tons and tons of scratches your pictures picked them up well and look identical, certainly unlike any other chrome tool I'd received, for sure. Very sorry to hear, its super annoying and even more so when you're as excited to receive them as we both sounded to be. I was under the impression mine where certainly used. Unfortunately my napa ***** big time, so I wasn't able to warranty them for "looks to be used" claims.

For both our sake, please get them returned. I kept mine and have used them a fair amount already in the week or so I had them at work, they function fine and have been very useful, but....it just doesn't sit right with me. Every time I look at them I'm just annoyed. I generally like used tools as they tell a story and it does interest me what my wrenches had seen previously but I also paid for new tools. They're priced well at 105 dollars(Or 115, I forget) but...its not fair to receive used for sure. Speaking of which, I still might email napa corporate and see if they give me a better answer than the napas near me.

Edit; I just noticed the towel too, that dirty/greasy? Mine as well, note them in the background. I'd say we both somehow got REALLY unlucky. Odd that it ends up being two forum users, so I'm curious how many OTHER used tools have went out.

I plan to make a stink about it, I'm going to go to my local store tomorrow and see if they are any help to me and I think I'm going to look up napas contact email right now and send them a message as well. Costumers paying good money should not be treated this way, I don't care how low the provider decides to discount there tools, if you are selling them without disclosing there "used status" then WTH did 2 costumers receive what looks like used merchandise.

If nothing else works, I can confirm that they respond to Facebook messages on the Carlyle tools page. Wouldn't be my first stop, but a backup if customer service isn't helpful. I think it's just one guy who does it, but he seems nice.

Sounds good, hope your local napa swaps them out pain free for you, it would make the situation not **** nearly as bad. I'm actually going to send my cousin a message that works at a napa a little out of my "I wanna drive here and buy tools range" but he was no help with my OTHER napa related issue (Getting a homak tool box) so I hadn't done so yet. I guess its worth a shot.

Let me know if you get a good contact email, I'll be sending my questions/concerns email here I suppose. Maybe selling used at real deal prices is standard, cause indeed two forum users both get used tools? Outta thousands of buyers? Seems odd.

Yep that's exactly who I just emailed attached the same pictures as I did here so hopfully in the morning I will get some kind of answers, in the email I added my local store with the question of if I could simply take the wrench set there for a exchange as I did want a return just and exchange for "NEW" tools. We will see. Good luck on your end, Ill post up once I get a reply

With all of this talk of warranty and Carlyle, and the rumors that Harbor Freight’s “Icon” line may be from the same OEM, is anyone holding out for Icon as well or shall we keep purchasing Carlyle.

I really want to try their metric 3/8 set, but if Icon is cheaper and easier to warranty...

First, I don't think there's really "all this talk" about Carlyle warranty issues. I think 2 members in this thread have had negative experiences that are yet to be totally resolved. Has no-one had a bad experience with HF? I really can't understand why HF is everyone's default, or the measuring stick...anyway.

Second, I haven't seen anything about them being the same OEM. Also, same OEM doesn't necessarily mean same specs, and even if it did, the ICON line literally only has 4 tools in it (2 torque wrenches, an impact extender, and some snap ring pliers)...I wouldn't hold your breath.

Third, Carlyle doesn't have 1 OEM. Carlyle is a re-brand like Matco. Carlyle hammers are made by Trusty Cook in Indianapolis for instance. No way in hell HF is ever going to carry expensive, US made hammers like that. HF may sign deals with an OEM that makes a few Carlyle odds and ends, but that isn't at all the same thing as being able to equate HF tools to Carlyle tools.

I for one can't stand Harbor Freight. I am glad they exist for a few odds and ends that I will only use once or a handful of times, but probably half the stuff I've ever bought from there I've regretted buying because it broke on first use, was a royal pain in the ***, or just provided a crummy experience, and I've spent even more money upgrading from HF to other brands than if I had just bought the better **** to begin with.

Like many men on here wiser than myself have said...buy tools for their quality and value, not their warranty. Just because you CAN warranty tools are harbor freight doesn't mean you WANT to have to do so. If you purchase quality tools and use them correctly, you shouldn't even need the damn warranty. With HF tools though, if they didn't warranty them, no-one would buy them because you've got to warranty so many.

I was basing my presumption on this thread:

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=405597

And have based most of my Carlyle purchases on their more “unique” offerings so far. I’d like to upgrade some of my home tools and having the ability to purchase matching tools or warranty them on sundays plays a role. I have enough Snap-On hardline tools to never “need” a warranty (on paper) but I understand things happen. (loss and accident)

Holy **** :wtf:

Yeah, those wrenches look to be the same Infar Carlyle long patterns. The ratchet heads look more like a Gearwrench design than a Carlyle design, larger head on the 90 tooth. Sockets I can't tell. I've got a bunch of Carlyle sockets, and I don't think the knurling around the bottom looks quite the same.

Going to be extremely interesting to see where these fall in terms of price point when they hit the shelves. If they're reasonably priced (which we would expect since it's HF) and expansive enough in offerings...ICON might turn into a killer Pro-sumer mechanic brand.

Honestly...I'm sort of glad HF is going to offer some up-market options here considering they're really the only store you can walk into and buy things TODAY. I find the ICON brand name a little gimmicky, but on the whole, I'll probably try out a few of their offerings when they come around.

I would rather have Carlyle, BUT if HF is cheaper than Napa quarterly sales flyer pricing (say 20+ percent) then I may go back to old faithful HF.

Oh and some Carlyle pern to get this thread back on topic:

Agreed. If I look back at Napa's history, their Pro line tools have always been pretty good. Danaher offerings for many years, not Carlyle. So I feel pretty confident that even if Carlyle went away for some reason, they'd still have something good.

HF on the other hand, I wouldn't be surprised at all if they spent the next 50 years doing exactly what Sears did. They're using the same Good, Better, Best pricing structure and good warranty that helped Sears rise to prominence, but at the end of the day, HF isn't exactly the most honest company (neither was Sears) and building brand recognition onto to sell out seems well within their domain.

Ooo, pretty wrenches.

My one complain about my carlyle wrenches is that the chrome doesn't seem as durable as some other brands. Mine seem to show a lot of scratches after their first or second use. No biggie I guess, but just something I've observed.

I have started my Carlyle collection. Bought the 3pc plier set and 3pc wire stripping plier set and 8pc screwdriver set. Been using these daily since and no complaints. The Pliers are IDENTICAL to Matco pliers. I have a coworker with Matco pliers and then only difference is orange grips instead of blue. Getting some ratchets amd maybe wrenches next.

They actually had that plastered on the back of my receipt, posted it along with a few extra pictures somewhere here. My local napas (2) still said **** you. Well...one said we dont deal with napa online even tho the store locator lists them, the other said they wouldn't exchange them cause they only appeared "lightly used" or only had cosmetic blemishes..

This is really sad..and embarrassing for NAPA....They might save a few bucks by screwing you over..but lose ?? in potential sales. We have rep that is at the shop every day and would take care of something like this without even thinking about it...and probably even try to make it up to you with some freebies...coffee cup, embossed drawer liners, etc...so i have no idea why corporate dosnt step in and fix it...?

The guy that owns the one closest to me is just a *****, I went in there with my last boss and he was a ***** over a jug of ATF lol. The other one is a little farther and exchanged my very obviously used ratchets, but determined that they didnt want to exchange the wrenches. Not their fault, but they also didnt go above and beyond. I only mailed napa corporate this evening but if it's the same response it's of no use to me :(

Ok. I feel like you all need some education on here. First off, just like most franchises, there is the corporate element which in this case is Napa online, plus all the background stuff it takes to make Napa run like online customer service, branding, advertising, procuring tools, shipping hardware to stores, etc.

The other side is the franchisee, which is the Napa store you’re going to that isn’t treating you as they should. Just like how some Dunkin’ Donuts are nice and clean, and others are disgusting roach hotels, it’s because a lot of a local store comes down to the owner, not corporate.

These local stores need to accept the return. They aren’t and you aren’t getting them to follow through. You could call corporate and have them explain it to the local store. It’s doable cause it’s legally there in corporate policy. But you have to pull teeth because you’re patronizing a **** business. If there isn’t a better Napa nearby, I’m sorry for you.

For those who got used ratchets online, that’s corporate screwing you and unfortunately when it comes to Napa corporate or the franchisees, sometimes you can be left wanting.

That said, there are ways to make this a smooth and easy process. Just go online and do reserve for store pickup. You pay in store and get a store receipt so returns become a non issue. If the package looked used, just don’t pay when you get there and say to take it back. They will order you another or cancel the order. It takes literally like two days max for the shipment to arrive at your local Napa from a distributor after ordering online.

That said, I have not had any of the problems you are describing. I’ve never bought anything online and had it delivered to my house though. The local Napa guys I have can be confused sometimes, but they mean well and I don’t mind patronizing them. Every tool I got has been gorgeous. I like Carlyle tools and I have easy warranty work at the local store since I’m in there system as buying all my tools there, not the online corporate system.
