Lug: if you have more information and sets to post please do. also thanks for the AWESOME posts of your tools and the information I didn't know.

ALL: I kept stepping over my Billings HUGE DOE today and still haven't taken a picture of it. i'm guessing it's close to 2 inch on each end and i'll post pictures of it soon with a bunch of his relatives.

Lugnutz - very interesting.

Interesting that the September 1941 document describing the wrench set calls for them being "chrome plated"... I have to wonder if any chrome plated sets actually were in the field and/or manufactured... most stuff of that era is all black finish.

a recent acquisition - curiously it seems to have been stamped from the same blank as my 1823 7/16" (which is of more recent production.) this one's a bit older.... I'm guessing 50's... (?)

That MB Gen Spec was published prior to alloy restrictions, which kicked in early 1942. Substitute finishes were cadmium plating, enamel, japanning, one of the chemical processes (black oxide, phosphate, etc), or nothing. There are alot of natural steel survivors out there.

Thanks, guys.

Era, yes; 1941, no.
The U.S. was initially isolated from the hostilities. Maybe the date is now struggling to live in infamy, but by DECEMBER 7, close to 99 percent of 1941 tools must have been manufactured already. Within four days, the U.S. entered the war, but as Lug pointed out, the practical consequences of that announcement required time to evolve.
The lucky strike that got me interested in collecting non-woodworking vintage tools was a box of Snap-on Ferret (3/8dr) sockets. All chrome-finished and most date-coded 1941 or 1942.

Since I've previously posted my wartime Barcalo tools, here is a set of postwar Barcao DOE wrenches I picked up at an estate sale yesterday.

I spent a little time going through my DOEs and took some group photos. As was demonstrated earlier in this thread by PrivateLugnutz, I haven't a clue what I own.

In no particular order, here are a few posts for your enjoyment.

All of my Craftsman tappet wrenches. Please note the Craftsman #1 that has a 17/32 size - which I assume is uncommon, if not rare. I purchased this wrench last week at ReStore along with a couple of Craftsman #2s which differ slightly from the other two long C wrenches.

The last four were purchased new by me back in the early 90s

Thank you for the compliment!

Here's some more I didn't have a chance to post ...

Craftsman. The large sizes were a set I bought new from Sears back in the late 80s. I had to order them and have them shipped to the local store. It's missing one wrench that I sacrificed by cutting in half for a special job.

Notice there's two different marks ( -V- and -VV- ) in the same set.

Also included are a handful of older misc wrenches I have acquired over the years including a lone metric wrench.

Brian

A few Wright wrenches I acquired from a shop that was closing its doors, and for the Indestro fans, my Indestro family.

Here's my set of 5 Heyco #333 Whitworth DOE's. Made in West Germany.
Size range 3/16" to 1/2"

I've owned these now for near 40 Years. Used them on my Norton's and various Other British Bikes.

The wrenches that are off color are actually steel. The finish looks like that after the cosmoline is removed. Here are the wrenches from my Jeep set.

A couple sets of my vintage DOE's. Made in USA. Unknown Brands.

I used to have the original metal wrench holder clamp for the straight ones, but cannot find it anywhere.

Jeep: thanks for the 411 and the close up.

Moto: not sure but I might have hundreds of those NO NAME wrenches and would love to know who made them or what brand they are. were they maybe sold in toolboxes that were put in cars or trucks?

DRIVSITFAR: No idea how old they are, probably 1940's 'Industrial' type? Tough as nails though and all Made in USA.

I eventually would like to mount them on a board with some other vintage black oxide type tools as a display.

Motorman: that set of CM tappet wrenches is pretty fabulous; a really good example of one of Craftsman's stellar moments in design. (or maybe we should credit MDF?)

Drives: how many of those no-name wrenches are marked "Select Steel" or "Select Forged Steel" and/or have dart-shaped panels on the shanks?

like the first and third down from the top here:

Indestro_Select_Super_Double_End_Offset_Box_Wrench_Comparison_730_731_911_912_01.jpgIndestro_Select_Super_Double_End_Offset_Box_Wrench_Comparison_730_731_911_912_02.jpg

(yeah yeah - they're not open-ends.... that's the first photo image I found.)

Indestro stamped out millions of wrenches that didn't have their name on them: the old "pump wrenches"; open-ends; double-end box; offset double-end box. Only give-away signs are the "Select" and the shape on the ends of the panels.
I see them all the time listed on Ebay by sellers who have no clue they're Indestro product - usually listed pretty cheap because they're a "no name" wrench.

these are just from the last few days - all Indestro:

Okay, I'm not a DOE enthusiast, but even I'll admit those look pretty nice.

I do have some DOEs in my garage that were part of bundled purchases. If I have time between Mother's Day yard work this weekend, I'll post them up.

Motorman55's noname wrenches have forged-in raised letters that remind me of Hinsdale and Craftsman Vanadium wrenches. Maybe these are carbon steel siblings.

New additions this AM, (Still had no time/energy to dig out a lot of the other DOE's...)

A Proto and a SO "ratcheting" DOE. I think this is my only Ratcheting DOE. I have any number of Combo's with the "ratcheting" open end...

Per standing orders from Lugnutz, I flipped this Bonney over at the flea this morning, and uncovered my first 585-36. Guessing these are probably the most commonly found, due to large size. Date code looks like FU (1943) to me.
Also picked up what looks like the right military tool box (40-B-1840), although with a brushed coat of gray over the olive drab.
