Mostly because I can :)
The bell system stuff I collect, so whenever I find it, I try to get it.
I also like old Klein pliers, really admire the craftsmanship and how things used to be!

Hey Jeff! I recognize a couple of those!

There are some impressive collections in this thread. I have to ask though, as I am a minimalist, why have soooo many different pliers, or screw drivers for that matter. I'm 37 and have had so many different pliers over the years but I have always found that you really only need a select few styles of each type. I do every thing from wood working, to welding, to mechanic, to electrical and still don't have half of what most have shown in this thread. And With all of my tools, I have four large cabinets. I couldn't imagine having more than I need. I'd run out of room for projects to use my tools on.
Is it a collectable thing or something else??:dunno: By no means should anyone take offense please, I'm just wondering:beer:

could be just a collectible thing............. or mebbe ocd..........

It gets to be a bit like drugs... :dunno:

I'll have to do mine this sometime this weekend (maybe) as it's too big a job to do during the week...

Current count is well north of 250, including the vise grips (46 pairs at least) and at least 75 different brands...

Buying two old auto mechanic's sets of tools this past summer didn't help and I'm still buying odd interesting Pliers, I have 2 pair waiting for me to get time to take pics and post those in the Garage sale thread and one of the pair will also hit the tiny tools thread (little bity Kraeuter dykes), the other pair are an OLD pair of snubby Crescent cable cutters

I think collecting certain types of tools can develop into an obsession. You end up buying more than you will ever need or use. I can see buying a certain variety for different tasks and ease of use, or even a few duplicates for commonly used items or if they are being stored in different locations. It is certainly fun to collect but ultimately the goal should be to use them right? :) I have most of the pliers that I will probably ever need but then again, when I see a great deal on something I don't have it can be hard to pass up ;)

I have one set home, one at work and one set in my work car. That explain a little bit?
VERY nice collection!

+1
What I dont understand is why one would need 5 of exact same items. Dont take me wrong I love having double of everything just in case, but 5? Really?

Because I have the wallet of an adult and the mind of a child. ;)

I was telling my wife the other day that I need to buy some more pliers, and she gives me the look. Everyone in our family wears one or more pairs of glasses, and none of them are really adjusted well. If you don't want to damage $150 frames, mar the finish etc, you need a set of six to eight opticians pliers.

Why five of the same kind? Group photo doesn't mean they all normally live in the same place, could be work, truck bag, etc., plus some tools get used in pairs. I looked at the same picture and wondered why only one size of plierwrench.

Has anyone found a version of the pliers rack that has narrower slots? I find that they work ok for large pliers, but smaller ones don't sit in the racks very well.

Grasshopper easy to explain:

You are out on a nice sunny day,and low and behold you spot a flea market with several tables of tools. As you walk by you cannot believe all the wonderful old pliers that were made in the states back in the day; and to your amazement they are not that expensive.

Then you mind starts to say things like oh my gosh if I had to just buy that pair today I would be paying $29.99 plus tax just for that one pliers and here the guy is only asking $3.00 dollars so you start a buying frenzy (kind of like sharks going after a body in the water).

Soon you have enough to cover the Earth:lol_hitti

That is how it starts, ask me how I know this:lol:

I gotcha. Everyone has something collectible I suppose. I've never had much of a collectible hobby, but I guess I do collect "tools" in a sense. However, My collecting of tools is a little different. I buy tools that I need at the moment or in the near future. I may only use them once but I don't get rid of them after that. That would be my extent of collecting. I do agree with the idea of having "sets" of tools. I have several of my own sets.

It is a bit like my wife and her shoe collection. She says, and rightly so, that her shoes last a long time. Having been married for 25 years I abstain from saying, " Of course, if you wear two different pairs every day of the year, it will take around 2 years before you have to start over, so they are not really used very hard"

Same with me and tools. And old transistor radios . Or electrical test instruments,,,,,,,

Yep, I have a chest in the carage, basement, work truck.
Then I have tool pouches.
And let's not forget the bags in all my (3) personal trucks .

Steevo, find an old CD rack and cut it down; The one I used is perfect for the narrow pliers, (not so god for the fat ones... other than the 2 slots for the "double album" cases.)

I used the narrow slotted shelf from rubbermaid, for standing my wrenches on edge.

I found a few that I missed that were fairly easy to get to.

Gearwrench and Snapon
L1010371.jpg

Some really cheap, low quality Chinese made pliers I got about 10 years ago
L1010372.jpg

Mac Tools pliers - average quality. I believe these were manufactured in China.
L1010373.jpg

Bag for Mac pliers. I believe I got the bag with pliers and 4 adjustable wrenches for $90. I think it was worth it.
L1010375.jpg

My other pliers are scattered around and too much trouble to get to.
