Thank's Rez.

This is a custom space saver for a Porsche race team trailer. There is a right and left piece to hold up the car and it doubles as a work bench.

2 x 2 x .120 walled 6061 T-6 tubing. All tig welded.

imgp0132a.jpg

There up against the wall , so no back was needed.

ZT.........I remember you talking about using a Miller Dynasty welder a while back, and I had an opportunity to weld with one. I guess I had no idea how much of a quantum leap that this welder seems to have achieved in it's ability to easily weld a variety of metals. I was especially impressed with it's ability to handle aluminum. Is the Dynasty the top of the line, (I think it is an inverter type?) or can a newer Sychro-wave achieve the same performance?? I am thinking of selling my HF 250 tig welder and purchacing a newer tig machine and am wandering what to get. Thanks for your help

I used to use a Dynasty 300SD at the last company I worked for, as the head R&D fabricator, and we had 12 of them on our production floor. (1) 200, (9) 300's, and (2) 350's.

The Dynasty's are the Elite when it comes to welding machines. I have a Syncrowave 250DX Tigrunner at my shop and while it is the absolute best machine, IMO, for what I do, I sometimes miss the Dynasty's performance on aluminum (like today when I was welding some .050" aluminum).

The inverter technology allows boosted Hz frequencies which tighten the arc cone on AC and make welding aluminum much easier and refined. The SD that I used had no pulse module or other features but that's another area where the Dynasty can shine.

If you are doing a majority of aluminum work then a Dynasty is a great choice but that premium performance comes at a very premium price. They no longer make the 300 and only offer the 200, 350, and 700 models. As an example, the TigRunner package for the Dynasty 350 retails for $9k....that's a whole lotta dimp.

The Syncrowave 250dx that I have retails for $5400 and when I bought mine I was able to get it for $3k new. The reason I say my Syncrowave is the best machine for me is based on it's overall value and ROI. It has paid for itself time and time again in the last ten years I've been using it and while the Dynasty would do the same, my initial investment was much less and I have been able to use the money I saved to buy other equipment.

Thanks ZT, I have an opportunity to buy a 300 demo unit for around $3K, that's just the welder with no accessories, sounds like I should jump on it. Thanks for your input.

dopeeeeee took me a few double takes to understand it so cool!

Thank's Muibubbles. Yeah I guess I could of explained it a little more but I'm a fabricator not a story writer.:bounce:

Nice work Nasty!!!

Thank's man.

Hey Zen, what do you use for flanges?

E-Tec, I'm assuming your talking about flanges as a backing for the doors to rest upon. I cheated and made the doors a little bigger than the holes. Therefore I didn't need flanges.

Engineers trying to reinvent the wheel........It has a 4130 3/4 round tube chassis enclosed in carbon fiber.
Suspension is based off of a Reynard Formula ford double wish bone rocker type.
Hyabuza motorcycle engine with hydro formed custom stainless exhaust coupled to an oil cooled ,electronic, hydraulic transmission of there own design......Carbon body work, wing bla. bla bla.........Engineers......bla.bla...:)
They wanted to start a racing series, renting these out for 150 grand a season......Up here??
What were they thinking.:headscrat

Slick looking car... engineers are great and all, but there is still a reason most businesses are run by accountants. :) It's a tenuous balance between innovation and risk, sound business decisions and reward.

Businesses based on innovation are an engineers best friend and an accountants worst nightmare...

Made from 1 1/2 tube with square tubing going from the lower bar to the lower radiator support. I welded the tabs on the back side so the lights would be closer to the grill. I have attached a simple drawing so that you will get the general idea.

Made these for a guy going to campaign at the Rally of Perce Neige in 2001.
Came back to see me after he met sideways with a pole guide wire during the event.
Replaced a third of his roll cage........The light rack survived though!

Since we are on light bars.
My light bar/push bar. Had 1/2 plate cut on a plasma cnc machine and gave the 2" dom a slight roll. holds 4 baja designs 8" hid's. I added receiver up front for a winch and D ring, and it protects the coolers behind it.

Nasty, i would come work for you for free, just to soak up some knowledge from you.

Sorry guys, it's not mine...It takes up half the shop and it laughs at my fork lift. I wish the truck guy would of set it down 8'' back so my truck would still fit in the shop....it must be over 20,000lbs!
But as long as it's here I know I'll have work from them.:)

Bluedog, That's more of a battering ram disguised as a light rack.:bounce:
A nice one at that.. I like functionality.

This next project I first came across in the early nineties.
It' a 1968 ( I think ) Titan Formula Junior powered by the good ol Kent cortina
1600 cc motor coupled to a upside down VW bus gearbox filled with Hughland gears.
The owner brought it in for a 'refreshing' after purchasing it. I can't find those pics now...But I have the finished ones.

But years later he was involved in a crash at Watkins Glen. For those of you who watch Nascar, you have seen those huge blue Styrofoam blocks in the corners. Great for slowing down big cars, but not so for cigar shaped cars going into them backwards at 120 mph..The block just exploded and let the car into the guardrail at speed. There was Styrofoam everywhere, even in his helmet.
The driver got knocked out and burned on his side and arm, neck from the scalding hot radiator water that came out of the broken chassis rail.
He still races today.

Much of the back of the car was replaced.

Water runs in the top rails...

All new suspension.

A few years further down the road. On the way to the races at Tremblant. Some guy on the highway almost drove into my customers truck , who had to brake hard to avoid a collision. Breaking the straps holding the car to the trailer........and dinging an A -arm on the trailer crank.
Was close by , so he gave me a call.
Had him all temporarily patched up and on the road in no time.He was able to have a fun weekend none the less.

Hmmmm. What else can I build with rolled rectangular tube?
How about a log skidder!
With the help of my oldest boy...

imgp6318.jpg

He calls it Frankenstein.:) Both of them.

imgp6319.jpg

I couldn't budge the big ones so We built mini Frankenstein to help.
It goes on the other end of the log so it doesn't drag on the ground.

imgp6320.jpg

We had a blast with the ice dune buggy trail last year so this is what I really had in mind.
A trail grader and Zamboni. Built with whatever was laying around...
The blade is 4140 though.

imgp6654.jpg

Fully adjustable.

Steers like a real pig so I modded the front end with a steermaster 2012.:)

imgp6650.jpg

A multi function thing...
All we need now is more snow and freezing temps.

Thank's for the kind words AeroNautiCal.

This last project is particularly ugly, but functional.:)
Five minutes after I took these shots, I dropped my camera on the shop floor to it's death.:(
Now I am in the market for a new one...

This is why I don't do more fab projects. For my aluminum roof rack I measured the roof, modeled a rack, performed stress analysis on the model..., modeled a welding fixture (so that I can reproduce them, I sold them for a while) built the rack from drawings and the fixture, and it fit perfectly the first time (well, the second time once I figured out the weld order to manage warpage), powdercoat, route wires, build a fuse panel (or two) for the lights and other accessories, drill a 5/8" hole through a 3/8" thick portion of my roof, and presto, rack is done.

Here's a thing I just finished. These are known as German Wheels. I used a modified Harbor Freight tube roller to roll the main tubes. The result was a beautiful helix that had to be chopped up into more or less flat sections and then welded back together. One of the students, the girl in the picture, welded the short hand holds together.

He can head over there right after he convinces my wife to take an interest in welding. Bonus points will of course be awarded if she subsequently takes an interest in flipping around in a German wheel.

Somehow I don't see that happening... :headscrat
